Raid Explained?

k from what i understand u get a performance increase under RAID 0 but only certin tasks useing 2 7,200rpm drives but all the stickys go beoynd my head
i'd like a dumbed down explantion
i get faster read speeds?
faster write speeds?
what is it good for what isnt it good for

I'll take a stab at translating it for you. RAID0 in it's simplest form is simply splitting the workload of one drive in half. Half the data goes to and comes from one drive and half the data is written to and read from the other drive. In theory both read and write speeds are accellerated, however the typical user moving small files around in typical windows use will see little benefit from a RAID0 array. RAID0 striping can be of benefit in situations where large contiguous blocks of data are routinely moved around as is the case in video &/or image editing. The downsides to RAID0 are increased setup complexity and possibly decreased data integrity. If either of the two drives malfunction it's possible...indeed likely ALL the data on the array will be lost. One must weigh the possible performance benefits of RAID0 carefully against the downsides of RAID0 and determine if it's right for them. I'm a fan of RAID0 but one should be aware of it's limitations.

WOW I just noticed you're using DDs RBX with nozzle #5. That's the showerhead nozzle is it not? I stuck nozzle #4 in my RBX and have been with it ever since, #5 looked just too restrictive. What pump are you using with it and how is it doing for you?

k so Raid 0 offers performance increase with larger files and maybe a little increase with smaller files? yet if one drive fails i lose everything but really what are the odds of the drive failing? this will be my third computer and havnt had a hd ever fail at any time so am not really worried bout it
so with 2 160gb hds in raid 0 show up as 1 320gb hd or 1 160gb hd?
and i think i made a mistake with the nozzle #
#5 is the one with the small holes right? if so then i'm useing #4
got a ehiem 1250 and havnt checked my temps yet since i just installed it and am still making some changes will get back to ya on temps and such

Yes, RAID 0 does just that. Once your RAID is set up, windows will detect it as a single large 320GB hard drive.

I think you've got the idea of RAID0 now. There is also the additional complexity of setting up a computer with RAID0 to deal with. Generally you can count on your setup disc NOT having a driver for your raid controller so you'll have to give it one during setup. Pardon me if you're already aware of all this. I run 2x160GB Maxtor sata raid0 drives on two of my systems and wouldn't care to do w/o RAID.

Same pump I have too. Same block, same nozzle, same pump...I don't suppose you're using an old radiator from a 1990 Toyota are you?

RAID0 doesn't cost you any HD real estate. IOW yes 2x160 RAID0 is 320GB(or HD manufacturers idea of what 160GB is). RAID1 mirroring would result in 160GB capacity with 2x160GB drives, but that's for data redundancy not pure throw caution to the wind speed.

The ICH5R is for SATA drives and is the 2nd best on the market to nforce 3, The promise will do SATA and IDE, it is easier to set up, The ICH5R also is the sounth bridge so its faster and its not another chip connecting to the south bride. I ahve the same motherboard as youa nd I use both, if you look at my SIG. Just remember the ICH5R SATA ports are #1 and #2 and they are the highest of the 4 of them. the 2 lower ojnes are for the promise or just extra SATA drives. read the manual that came with the motherboard there is some inportant settings you ahve to make in your bios
