difference in the cpu's?

Hey all

I have, as people may know from my recent posts, just upgraded to a AMD XP 2600 Barton from an my xp 2000.

However I have heard mention of a 2600 +m or mobile, what does that mean exactly?

Does the + or mobile, part stand for laptop mobile cpu or is it something different?

The mobile is a beautiful abd wonderous thing. It's too bad that you didn't ask this question before you bought your desktop processor : because now you'll probably be or The desktop processor runs at 1.65V stock and the mobile runs 1.45, so the mobile runs cooler. The desktop has the multiplier locked and thus requires modification to the chip itself to overclock anything but voltage or fsb while the mobile is FULLY UNLOCKED!!!!
There's your differences in a nutshell.

So what is all this unlocking business about?

Is it possible to unlock mine? plus is it worth it?
So far -along with my pc2700 ram- I have managed to get my 2600 barton up to
2000.6 MHz on a fsb of 347.9 MHz.

So I am not doing to badly so far, and I no that my cpu is capable of going way beyond that, as its a popular one in this scene, although obviously not as popular as the +m one.

If its superlocked there is not a damn thing you can do about it to unlock as its locked tighter than a gnats chuff! The mobiles typically overclock to around 2.5Ghz so you can see the difference. Yours should get to about 2.2 - 2.3Ghz with good cooling but the lack of a PCI lock plus RAM rated to 166FSB and a HSF which is not top notch might hold you back.

hrmm ok.

How does one go about finding out if the Barton is locked or super locked first ?
If it';s unlockable I will look into it later but I wouldnt mind finding out how its locked at the moment, for now ?

On the hsf side of things, I am going to invest in a much better model this coming thursday, plus a control system for the fans in my case.
Possibly some ram cooling hs and possibly fan combo.

There's a sticky here that tells you how to tell if yours is locked down.

The best & easiest way to find out if it's locked is go into your bios. Once there, find your CPU's multiplier option. This should be set on "auto". Then change it to whatever you want & if it does not boot up after that. You know it's locked.

I have not heard of any way to unlock locked processors. I believe if you mod the CPU to a MP compatible processor & have a K7D Master (dually rig) & use a hacked bios. This "may" unlock the die hard locked processors. I think emboss did this with two die hard locked CPU's. But this information is probably irrelevant because your not going to be using a dually rig. FYI - I guess.

**EDIT** Wanted to add........Don't change the multiplier to "anything". Try a lower number like 8 or 9. If you have the option for a 20X multiplier & your fsb is set at 200 mhz. The likely hood of that booting up is slim to none.

TFM

It is usually under "advanced chipset features".

007, on VIA boards there's a work around, you'll have to turn ur chip into a mobile, by connecting the 2nd and 3rd L5 bridges with some conductive material. Then using software, something like GCPUID (my sig, red link), you can change the multiplier from windows.

Actually its pretty simple. I've done it with my TbredB (RIP), that died after I tried to mess around with the L6 bridges (cut them), these set the maximum selectable mobile multi. While connecting the second L5 will just enable all the mobile multi range w/o the need to cut bridges.

ok the coolest :0 you have got me interested in this little mod work-around.

However when it comes to actually getting busy wiith the inner workings of a cpu I am a complete begginer. Although I have soldered on many an occassion.

Any sort of diagram or link you can direct me to that would give an instructions set to guide me ?

Here are two links on unlocking the Palominos, unlocking a palomino reqiured connecting the L1s. You will have to perform the same thing only on the 2nd the 3rd L5 bridge. Also there's one difference in the current CPUs from the one shown in the video, the actual bridges (the dots) are covered by some green material, the dots you see exposed are fake, you'll have to "dig" carefully with a needle or a pin and scrape off the green stuff covering the real dots (you'll understand what I mean when you look closely at the bridges).

Good luck!
