n00b question about artifacts

What actually causes artifacting? Obviously it's overclocking, but is it the temperature or the quality of the specific core? A little of both? How do the two variables interact? Are there other causes besides heat and core limitations? Voltage?

Thanks!

Its usually because the GPU/Memory can't handle the speed.
