Dvd player wont work

First of all i dont know much about computers. The other day my comp was making funny noises and i checked in the back and the fan thats in the powerbox wasnt moving. So i turned off the pc and turned it on and the funny sound went away but now my dvd player dont work. it opens up but it doesnt seem to read the cds when i put em in. So before i go and buy something without a clue i would like to know what i need to buy first. Im guessing a new powerbox or dvd player?
