3 sticks of 512 ram better than 2 sticks(since no dual channeling)

Never heard of dual channel before..I bought 3 512 sticks of pc-3200. Will dual channeling only work with 2 or 4 sticks of the same ram? Would it be a good idea to just get 2 gigs or 1 gig of ram? Is the performance increase even that much better that 1 gig dual channeled will be better than 1.5 gigs of ram?
