Harddrive broken?

I tried installing windows xp on my uncles computer. I formatted the hd and installed it. But when it finished installing and rebooted it said error loading operating system and wouldn't boot. I tried installing it a couple times but it didnt work. So i tried installing windows 98 back but when i went to format it back to fat32 I got an error and it wouldnt let it format. I know windows 98 was working fine before I tried installing xp. Anyone got any ideas?

try geting the test program for whatever hard drive it is. Usually on the manufacter's website they have a download for a program that will run from dos and check the hard drive. You might have a dead drive on your hands

if you want install windows 98, use windows xp disk and boot from it, once it gets to the part where you have to pick delete partion, create partion and intal, just delete partion and press restart the drive then will be raw, does your unckle has more than one hard drive installed
