ramdisk

being the proud owner of 1gb of ram (hey it's cheap), I want to use a ramdrive with windows2000.

I downloaded a program called ramdisk.sys from microsoft, but I don't have a clue how to use it.

If you could tell me how to use/edit that program, that'd be great. or if you could point me to another program, that'd be great too. I'm also interested in putting my pagefile.sys on this ramdrive (as stupid as that may sound), so the ramdrive has to be created before the OS boots and creates the pagefile.

one more question, would it be possible and wise to compress the ramdisk? I haven't really used ramdrives since the days of DOS. thanks for your help.

Well, if the ramdrive.sys hasen't changed from the days of DOS 6, all I have to do is dig around and find my DOS 6.0 manual to give you the specifics. While you wait, you could get Ramdisk98. Runs in windows, and supports emulating HDs and FDs in RAM. Allows FAT32 on really big disks too (ramdrive.sys I think will only go up to a 32MB HD...)! It is shareware, but a really nice program. It will backup the ramdisk's image to the HD (on shutdown or timer), and can restore that image on bootup. With Ramdisk98 (not sure about ramdrive.sys) you can compress your drive too.

Just looked... Seems Ramdisk98 got switched over to some other company... Here's the new addy!

Hope it helps!

loadhigh C:\ramdrive.sys xxxx

xxxx is a number, ie how big a ramdrive?
131072 is 128MB

OK! After finding the DOS 6 book, and finding out it didn't mention ramdrive.sys, and neither did my DOS 4 book, I almost hooked up my 386 to dig away at the built in DOS help files! However, I decieded to give it a try on the net first, and lo! Here you go. Seems to be an exact copy of the DOS help file!

This should have everything you need.

thanks guys but I'm using windows2000 (no DOS support --> no config.sys)

the ramdisk.sys I downloaded is designed only for win2k (I need NTFS support) but microsoft doesn't officially support it --> no help file.

this is the http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q257/4/05.ASP

I tried installing by right clicking on the .inf file, and then searching the registry but it came up empty.

using win2k, service pack2. appreciate any more suggestions.

well actually the NTFS support is not necessary, FAT is ok. thanks again

ok nvm, I got it to work. you'd think I'd be smart enough to check the .htm file

I can't put the pagefile on it though. I assume that's because the pagefile has to load before the ramdisk driver. oh well, at least I still have a ramdrive.

p.s. my sisoft sandra disk benchmark score is now 440,000
