Im wondering, is it possible to set up a Raid system using two different disks? I have 1 120gb 7200 rpm 8 meg WD drive, and an 80 gb 5400 rpm Maxtor drive.

Do both drives need to be the exact same, or can they run together?

they'll run but you'll only have an 80gb hd....

also from what i've read it's not good to have 2 diff hds in a raid setup... they should be identical for optimal performance...

Yes, it'll work, but with those drives you're throwing away performance. Since the drives need to run in sync for RAID 0, the array will slow down to the speed of the slowest drive and decrease in size to the size of the smallest drive.

The array would be 160gigs and have the seek time and transfer rates of the 5400RPM drive. You would be essentially throwing away the 7200RPM drive's performance and 40 gigs of its storage.
