Hi all
I sucessfully killed my 6800gt with an NV5 Silencer. I own(ed) a PNY 6800GT that had great temps. I am getting into the silent PC cooling arena & the 6800 fan is very terrible with regard to noise level. Carefully removed factory sink. I was kind shocked that they have you remove & leave off a back heatsink that cools a couple of chips. Very carefully using the supplied TIM installed the cooler being very careful not to get any TIM where it should have. Carefully screwed in the sync till the grommets bulged. After install my idle temps from default went up 10 degrees. I was OK with that. Ran Doom3 in minutes I was up to 92C!!!! Took of sync saw that GPU was only making partial contact. Carefully added a very small amount more to the gpu. Attached back the sink. Sirens from my system. Check leveling for the 50th time. Looks good. Did a total clean & reapply if TIM. Same thing. Reinstalled default heatsink. Same thing. Through some trickery was able to get it replaced for 60 bucks (thank god but still sucks). So I am back to a 6800GT. Any recomendations besides sucky Arctic- Cooling to quiet the beast? Want to take my silencer & smash it with a hammer This is more a warning for you guys BE CAREFUL.
