My system specs are:
AMD 2600+
Asus A7N8X Deluxe
300W PSU
768MB PC2700
I just fried my Ti4200 and am looking for a new video card around 175-200$
newegg, i found these 2.
The 5700 Ultra GDDR3:
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-128-188&depa=1
The 9800 Pro:
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-102-268&depa=0
I'm just wondering, which is better the 5700 ultra , or the 9800 pro.
I couldnt find any reviews comparing the two, just within the brands.

-Thanks for any advice.

Well, a 5950 Ultra competes with a 9800PRO, and in most cases the 980PRO wins. I'm talking about stock speeds and the same variables applied. The 9800PRO might beat the 5700 as well. This is as much as I can help due to knowledge limitations..lol.

score another one for the 9800pro. i think that waldow holdsthe 03 record in the 5700ultra cadegory and he has managed to push it a bit past 6k. now in extreme cases 9800pros have been pushed beyond 8.5k in 03. just to give you an idea of the performance difference.

9800opr: 8pipes/ 256bit mem

5700: 4pipes/ 128bit mem

a fairer competition would be the 5700 Ultra vs the 9600xt
Thats right, but at least the 5700U would win that one:)
In all fairness the 5700U is probably the fastest 4 pipe card ever, but could never compete with the 8 pipes and 256bit memory of the 9800pro.

8 != 4

hey buddy, um, a 5950u is an 8-piper, and it's got a 256-bit memory bus. it's an 8-pipe card with 4 sets of pipelines in a doubled-up configuration (4x2). if you can call a 5950u a 4-piper on this logic, then you can call a 6800u one too, since it's 4 sets of 4 pipes (4x4).

SCP is right, a 4-pipe 128-bit memory bus card can't compete. realistically, the 9800pro would win this one. for what it is though, the 5700u is a smokin' card.

9800 pro or 9800non pro or 9800xt. any of them beats the nvidia 5700.

even a 9700pro beats a 5700.

in real gameplay, a 9700pro beats a 5900 as well.

while a 9800pro could see 7k on 3dM03, and a 5900 could get the same 7k, the 5900 probably got 1k-1.5k from its 3dmar03 cheating drivers.

...until you realize that you might have to get new drivers every time a new game comes out (ala doom3) if you use an ATI card. This can really suck if you're on a dialup.

I don't know about the performance of a 9800pro firsthand, but I do know this: My 5900xt flashed to 5950u gets flawless performance out of doom 3. That's plenty for me until I go to PCI-X in the next few years.

also, I dare you to oc the AGP bus on that 9800pro to a high degree and see how long it lasts. I've had my 5900xt at 85MHz AGP for a long time now with no problems. That's a big part of why it chews through doom 3 :) and 3dmark03 was choppy until I went past 75MHz. That's a word to the wise for NVidia users out there.

as for the NVidia driver optimizations, build 340 blocked the advantage. My machine pulls a 5475 with an ugly cpu bottleneck (400MHz fsb) and the AGP bus at the stock 66MHz. I think that's still respectable for the generation of the card. I'll bump up my fsb and get some updated scores for you guys later, ones with the AGP oc'd.

Don't get me wrong, I'm no fanboy. I use what's good for my price range. And for the price, the 5900xt I got is awesome. Both cards have their strong and weak points, so it's really just a judgement call.

9800pro > 5700. The 59XX cards are more in line of the 9800s performance.

Not really. I'm still using old drivers, and they play all my games fine. Like any driver, you'll want to get the latest ones for the highest performance, but by no means are they a prerequisite for gameplay.

By the way icesaber, you'll want to shrink down your sig quite a bit. Check out this thread for information on the limits and how to do it. :)

ice, 5900's are good, but for $110 for a 9700pro off of ebay, or a trusted forum member in the classifieds would be a great deal, and imo can't be beat.

agreed. between a 5700u and a 9800p, 9800p wins. end of discussion *crosses arms on chest*

oh, and by the way, I cut down my sig.
didn't know you guys were that picky. whatever.
