I have been offered a 9500 pro card and a 9600 pro card for similar prices.

Which one should I buy?

imho the 9500pro but u should find out what 9500pro it is... is it the one with the ram in the L shape?

9500pro is not modable, it was the non pro 9500 that was softmodable, trust me I flashed mine to allow overclocking and the core does 390 easily but the memory only goes to 315 max, still gives me close to 17k in 3dmark 2001se:)

9800pro r360 is the next buy for me:D can't wait!!

9500pro is the faster card with 8 pipelines to play with. however the 9600pro has directx 9 support whereas the 9500pro doesn't.... still if you were just looking at benchmarks the 9500pro would win hands down.

A 9500 pro is pretty much equal with a 9600xt, but when overclocked the 9500 pro has more headroom.

If you want to gamble, look for a 9500 non-Pro. It has 4 pipes, but can be softmodded to 8. Depending on the memory configuration (straight or L-shaped) you can get a 9500 Pro or 9700 non-Pro respectivly. It doesn't always work, though (thats why its a gamble) and you get artifacts. A friend of mine has a 9500 that we tried to softmod with Omega drivers. It sort of worked, textures had glowing checkerboards on them, but nothing was crashing. With a NF7-S, 512 mb ram, and a Barton 2500+, he would score around 10,000 I think... I can't remember for sure, its been a few months since I played with his (my old) system.

It depends on what your goals are .

The 9500pro will be faster but will also
run hotter and require power from a floppy connector.

I would go with the 9500 tho if it were me.

Here is a 9700p:

since the 9500s have pretty much been phased out of the market, the ones mentioned above(L shaped) are becoming harder and harder to find. for the price it would cost to buy one, it would probably be a safer bet to get a 9700p. But if you are offered a really good price, get the 9500. the 9800SE 256-bit seem okay too. if the flash to a pro doesn't work, your card will still perform similar to a 9600XT.
