i'm looking for a fan or a device so i can circulate some air in a box that is not accessable to an electrical outlet, so it has to run off batteries. what would be cool is if someone knew of a way to run some case fans off a battery and even a timer would be ideal. I don't know if this is possible but if anyone has any input i would appreciate it.

Yes Ive seen them and once a long time ago Ive made them, pretty easy actually just a small motor and some fins. Of course you want efficiency so what I would is go to radio shack and see what they can do for you.

heres a link i got from a battery fan electronics search to give you a start

take a fan, cut the plug off of it.

Then try different batterys. See which battery turns the fan the longest and how long. Note they have to be at least 12v so maybe look for a battery pack with 12v out. Thats the ghetto way. last way would be to maybe special order a fan made to do what you need it to do.

hope this helps.

very cool link, i'm pretty sure that taking one of those apart may be doable. the only thing that sucks is that i want to conserve power to the battery and i would want to use some kind of a delay that would make the fan run say...every 3 hours or so for like 10 minutes. something along that line. any idea on wher e i may be able to find delays like that? or even better....fans that come with that...

jstutman, ghetto works for me but i'm still looking for a timer to make it run for short periods of time to conserve battery life....any ideas on how to work with that?

find a timer, out of some old equipment. run that in between your fan and battery. Like a soleonid or maybe one of those thingys you wind up? i cant think of the electronics name of what im looking for, but they do exist and its exactly what you would be looking for. i just cant think of the dang name :( it will come to me :)

ok, what do you think about this timer

with a 9v battery holder connected to this and then to a case fan?

i know it says that it needs 12v DC, so...do you think that it would have any problems using a 9v battery?

yeah it will cause ive been F-ing around as i read this, it wont work, my 9v or any lower wont. either that or its dead but it still zaps my tongue so i dont think so. maybe i have a fan that doesent require 12v but there all computer fans so i bet they all are 12vs

good deal for that timer as well. could it be cheaper if you put it together?

ok, so i found some small 12v batteries here.

I want to put them in a holder but the only one i think i've found is a "N cell" battery holder here:

http://www.allelectronics.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?category=970&item=BH-50&type=store

I wonder if it'll fit in there.... I'm a newb to this diy circuitry stuff so excuse the question but if it were to fit in that holder would i have any benefit to "daisy chain" them together?

so for the above timer, the batteries, the holders and the spare fans i have lying around looks like it may be able to be done for under $20....anyone have input on the setup>?

its risky just cause of the ouput of the battery being unknown. save 50c and just e tape the wires to the pos and neg of the battery. i would think those batterys would die like super fast and i doubt the fan would spin very much at all. might be best to go alternate route and buy a non computer fan.

mouser.com is a good electronics site but you gotta know yoru stuff to understand the web site
