i have an old HP, 500 mhz celeron, 64 megs of ram (i upped to 192 because 64 isnt acceptable)

I got it for free, and it really is as bad as i thought. A 10 gig hard drive, however, is acceptable.

So, someting ive needed...an internet/download server.

I want a computer that will sit in my closet where i cant hear it, downloading via my wireless pci card.

I dont want to have to mess with this computer, no keyboard, no mouse, no monitor...

remote desktop controll, and file sharing with the network are a must. Also, the ability to share the connection to my room is the most important thing. I would LOVE to have it give the room complete priority over itself, so that my downloads wont slow my browsing, or interfere with my games. I have a wired network in my room, and a wireless connection to my router, for the internet...

my first thought was i could throw windows 2000 pro on it, pc anywhere, and just use pc anywhere to pause its downloading when i wanted to use the internet... as well as to start downloads, and other stuff.
But thats a-lot of work to use, and not much to set up. Id much ratehr use some sort of linux box to download all day, and give priority to the network bridge over itself...

or anything really...im looking for a suggestion as to how to set this up. i dont want to really mess with a smoothwall router PC to replace my current router, because it would then be in the basement with the router...and my parents wouldnt like that.

whats your idea, how would you do this?

heh, quick and easy...ive been trying to install 2000 on this for 2 days to no avail yet :p

whats ultra vnc? is it free?

Vnc is like remote desktop in XP. I use TightVNC but they all work the same and is open source. Basically you use it to access the desktop of a computer without a monitor and keyboards.

overclock that ;), if you can find out who makes the pll I can help you over clock it to about 600Mhz :)

nah, 500 mhz is fine... all i need it for is downloading...any other suggestions other than 2000?

getting ready to play a game i also remembered...what about bandwidth managing? i want my room to have complete 100% priority over that computers downloads...how could i automate that?

ClarkConnect (Linux-based product)
http://www.clarkconnect.org/projects/home.php

Have a look at the features list on the right hand side, and see if the Home version (free) meets your needs.

Go here to download ISOs
http://www.clarkconnect.org/webapp/downloads.jsp

It should be similar in ease of setting up like SmoothWall.

And if you have any issue, download and read the manual first.

If you're still having issues, there's the forums.

Also check out the additional modules you can slap on.

There is a bandwidth manager here : The bandwidth manager lets you control the upload and download speeds for particular IP addresses on your local network. The module can also limit traffic by port/service.

I hope this suggestion meets your needs.

Have a look, and post back what you think. Good idea or not?
