I am building a basic gaming/overclocking rig for my friend. 2500+ mobile, SP-97, NB-1c (northbridge), asus 9800XT, nf7-s rev. 2, antec 450 true power. What memory do you guys suggest? We are looking for 2 x 512, preferably cheap (under 250) and good over clocker.

Just a thought to save you more money, ditch the 9800XT and go with the NVIDIA 5900XT - both are 256-bit, and roughly the same speed for $150 less. Once you OC to a 5950 you will be flying past the 9800XT.

Yeah they are pretty even, I brought it up to save money.
9800XT = $300+
5900XT = $175

I do not recommend 9800 Pro, it's only 128-bit.

This DOOM3 test here has the 9800XT @ 21.8 FPS and the 5950XT @ 28.2

Sorry to turn your memory thread into a graphics thread... but in the long run saving money on your graphics will allow for better memory.

RAM...the guy asked about RAM.

Samsung has come out with a chip that runs 2-2-2-11 on an XP rig up to about 210-220 and then all the way up to 270 plus at relaxed timings. Most of the major manufacturers have some variation of this, but it sells for just under 300 except for PQI is available at newegg for right at 250 (see real big thread) or PDP (Patriot) has just released theirs and its cheaper, but I don't think the 512 sticks are in stock at the egg yet. Another choice is to blow off tight timings and shoot for high fsb, then ram with Hynix bt-d43 or the newer revision of the Hynix d5 is an option. Some of the guys are getting 250-260 plus with the Hynix. Not many boards will do this high, but 240 + is not that uncommon. Kingston value ram (must pick and choose) and Kingmax DDR500 are each example of Hynix based ram, so is the Komusa HyperRam with the Adata modules (using Hynix d5 chips).

Below are some links with additional information or discussions.

Hope this gives you something to work with.

that is misinformation.only a select few are 128bit but the majority are 256bit.thats what the big deal about it was.the fact that they were calling a 128bit card a 9800pro.sorry to jump into a memory thread and talk about video cards but it irks me to see false info stated as fact :bang head

Sorry your right, some are 256-bit - my point was to get a 5950 as it's better than 9800XT for a saving of around $150.

Yes the guy did ask about RAM... does graphic card memory count?

I sold him my old asus 9800 XT for 150 casue I needed quick cash casue I am getting an msi x800 xt pe. My questing is about cheap memory that overclocks decently! Cna anyone send links to sites, rather than which chip I should get. I don't know what memory uses what chips

Here is something I just ran across. This Kingston comes with ch-5 chips which while not quite in the same league as the bh-5, still makes for decent ram. It is priced at $90/512 stick, plus shipping, from a reputable vendor (Fry's Outpost).

Update:

Turns out this ram (KHX PC3200) is actually the older stuff made with Winbond bh-5, instead of the newer stuff made with Samsung TCCD chips.

Are you serious? That would mean 1 GB of BH-5 would be $180! That's ludicrously cheap! Hmm. *Contemplates borrowing money and selling 2x256 BH-5 for 2x512 of BH-5*. Sorry for the threadjack.

To make it relavent. That PQI Samsung TCCD RAM looks promising. It can do high FSBs at ok timings with not much voltage. BH-5 RAM is the ultimate for high FSBs/low timings if you can supply it with enough volts.

My bad...I got this thread and another one crossed up when I added my comment. The bh-5 PC3200 I mentioned is available for $180/gig...but it is only in 256 sticks at $45 each (4x$45), plus shipping from Fry's. The ch-5 is also available for $90/512 as I indicated above. I was trying to tell everone that the 256 sticks are in fact the older, Winbond based ram, not the newer Samsung TCCD based ram.

They are described incorrectly and give the impression of possibly being the model that comes with the Samsung chips because they are described as being double-sided and with timings of 2-2-2-5 at 2.7v. They are instead OEM packaged KHX PC3200 (Non "A" coded). These modules (Non "A" coded) were only made with bh-5. The modules are single-sided and the rated voltage on the sticks are 2.5v instead of the 2.7v showing in the description.

Sorry again for my goof in the earlier post.

Uhmm.. 9800 Pro's aren't 128-bit unless you purchase the Lite or EZ version. Ok, about the ram, I suggest that you purchase Kingston (PC2700 possibly?) because the chips are D43. They OC very high, as I am running 2 x 256 PC2700 at 195 fsb (darn ECS). Also, if you think that you can survive 2 x 256, I suggest that you run to Circuit City as they are selling them (D43 Chips) for only 42$ with a 20$ rebate... BTW, they are selling mad fast...

We bought the 2 kingston chips from fry's out post. THey appear to be BH-5 chips (They have no A). We are going to build and oc the comp this weekend. I will let you guys know how it goes
