Budget Buyers Beware / zipzoomfly question

I've been building a lot of computers lately for family members and one of the things I like to start with are the P4 533A Terminator bare bones kit from Asus. I've always had a liking for Asus and the cases are "cute" and size friendly. The kit uses a P4SC-E TriOptix form factor motherboard. To go with it, I purchased a P4 2.4GHZ Prescott since zipzoomfly.com has them dirt cheap.

Anyways, after 2 hours of banging my head on the wall, I found a review at newegg.com where some dude was having the same issue. It turns out the Prescotts simply don't work with the P4SC-E motherboard. I have no idea why. I know it is not mentioned anywhere on ASUS's web page or zipzoomfly's web page. Also, there are no bios updates to fix it.

I emailed zipzoomfly and have yet to receive a response from them. It generally takes them a day, so I am not worried yet. Are they good about returns? This is the first problem I have had with anything I have purchased from them.

While your findings on the Prescott and this motherboard are good to put in here, your question about ZipZoomFly would best be answered (and posted) in the Vendor Discussion section of the forums. From the main forum menu, scroll to the very bottom to find the Vendor Discussion area.

Your question will be answered much faster there

According to the Asus website, that mobo only supports P4 processors 3.0 GHz and up. Here's the link to Asus.

Right, but he was using a 2.4 GHz CPU, which is not supported.

Yeah, but ...

I have the same barebones kit for my wife and run a 2.26GHZ Northwood in it.

When they say it "supports Intel Pentium 4 processors" they should be less ambiguous and say it "supports Intel Pentium 4 processors, except for the Prescotts, you schmuck."

Fabulous, you are just completely misreading that. What it says is that is can go over 3ghz, but also under 3ghz, look on any motherboard ever produced, it has the exact same thing, they say yes we can go over xxxxmhz, but that doesnt mean well, we only let people use this and nothing under. Same thing for heatsinks.

OK man_, I learned something. I was not familiar with that form factor and figured most mobos are downward compatable but the way it is written is funny.

"CPU Support - Intel socket478 Pentium 4 processors 3.0GHz+"

They should have defined support by cache and fsb if all speeds were allowed anyway.

BTW the P4 Terminator 533 (non A) does say willamette and northwood only.
Since "A" stands for the 533 fsb, 1 MB cache prescotts in the Intel code, it is reasonable to assume that the "A" in the Terminator 533A designation might also mean that that barebones takes prescotts. Also, since the CPU support information says socket478 Pentium 4 processors, I can see why you might have a beef.
