I've seen the NVidia 6800 utilities and the ease with which you can switch back from OpenGL to Direct X 9, and set up your overclocking of your card, but what about the ATI X800? Does it come with a utilitiy or do you have to go into the BIOS to effect your changes? If it doesn't come with that utility, are there 3rd party utilities that do the job? Freeware?

Ati cards are just as easy to use as the nvidia cards, you dont need to switch from opengl to directx 9 its based on the games you play and you dont need to mess with bios you get a program like nvidia.

Kewl...thanks...

the basic ati control panel (comes with ati drivers) includes a direct3d and opengl tab to control all your AA and AF and qualities and make profiles and such. there is another tab called "overdrive" which is just a checkbox you enable or disable. When enabled it overclocks the card based on how cool you can keep it.

other options:

Omega Drivers: omega drivers are made for ati and NV as you may already know. They incorperate a tool called "radlinker" which is used to overclock the card manually. www.omegadrivers.net

Ati tool: always growing, and being redesigned, even includes control of the fan and temperature viewing (temp viewing is in the overdrive tab in the ati drivers). And it has an automated overlock utility that analyzes frames for artifacts as it increases the clock speed. so it finds your max clocks automatically. With this program you can make overclock "profiles." so when the card switches to 3D mode, it will load your overclock speeds, and then go back to default speeds when going back to your windows desktop. You can even have the program play a sound when it loads the 3d profile, it can also be set to start when windows starts... lots of features... http://www.techpowerup.com/atitool/ good forum there for support as well.

Other: I know comapnies like sapphire have there own utilities to overclock. and there are many others. they will work with the stock ati drivers just as long as "overdrive" is not turned on (off by default). And lastly they can be adjusted in the bios. I know viperjohn makes a bios bootdisk where you can pick your clockspeeds and it will just flash them to the hardware.

Good luck!

oh spring on the xt pe, they will be out soon and can be found for $450 or so bucks at ecost and a few other places.
