I've got a pos video card in my amd machine right now. my intel box has a 6800 gt so i'm not completely starved for performance but I'm wanting to beef up the video performance in the other one without breaking the bank.

I'm wondering what sort of performance margin there is between the regular nvidia 6800 and the 9800XT or pro oc'd to XT?

They're about the same price ($275). I'm just wanting something that's DX9 and won't be obsolete in a few months...and something that will overclock nicely.

The 6800 is quite a bit faster than the XT, while a pro@XT is identicle to an XT, only with less ram. That doesnt take much performance off.

yeah...i mean, I can get a pro for like $175 on ebay any time I wanted but just based on how much faster the 6800GT is than the 9800XT, I could only see the regular 6800 being a little slower.

I guess it'd be worth the extra $60 or $70 for the 6800.

Thats about a no brainer isnt it? I thought the 6800GT would own the crap outta a 9800XT? Im pretty sure it does...although it depends on what games you wanna play too. ATi = Half-Life 2 Engine, nVidia = Doom 3 Engine. A few of my friends have 6800GT's, they score about 2.5 times more than i do on 3DMark05. I get about...2424 when overclocked (415/369). Most 9800XT cards will hit about 2800 on 3DMark05, meanwhile the 6800GT will hit like...alot more than that, i think i remember about 5600-6000 points

If the 9800XT was more like $200 vs. the $275 of the 6800 then you might have a good backing to pickup the 9800XT, but at similar prices the 6800 is the stronger of the two choices despite having half the memory.

The 6800nu owns the 9800pro, usualy more than 20% faster, sometimes more than 50% faster. The GT is in a completly different class.

eh, I thnk I'll probably grab the 6800. Are there any tricks to "turn on" the other memory pipelines? Sort of like the old radeon trick?

Memory pipelines? They are in the core....

But as far as I know, there IS a softmod to turn it into a gt and the chances are good.

lol my riva/tnt can do 100fps in cs 99.9% of the time why wouldnt you.

back to the subject 6800 > all right now lol

ATi cards dont really like the old Half-Life engine to much :( Thats like DX 6 or 7 isnt it lol? I get a good frame rate out of it though...except i love FSAA and AF....stupid jagged edges....making me lose performance :)

he means a 6800nu and its slightly faster than a 9800xt but in my *opinion* ati has the better IQ. However the 9800xt was never and is still not a good deal. If you cant afford a 6800, drop down to a 9700pro, those are in the low $100s and get like 5k in 2003 vs. 7k for the 9800xt so the 9800xt is 40% faster but at more than 100% higher price! However a good overclocking 9700pro can considerabily close the gap vs a maxed out 9800xt. I had a 9800pro that hardly oced and this softmodded 9500np is at least 80% as fast for 1/2 the price :)

OC550, I dont share your opinion. I have had 2 9700's, and neither has gotten anything over 5600 3dmarks. The XT might get 7000, while the nu has a chance to get well over 9000. Also, the IQ on the 6XXX series is greatly improved. The only thing I would worry about is NV's shoddy drivers as of late.

Btw a 6800 with the other 4 pipes enabled would lay the smackdown on a 9800 so hard there would be no comparison. And please dont recomend a ti4200....

I can vouch for the 9700. I used to have a pro and had it oc'd to 410core and 688 memory. It nailed a 6078 3dmark03 run but still just couldn't hang with a 98XT.

he also said he didn't want it to be obsolete fast either, therefore a 9800xt probably wouldn't be a good choice (better then 9700 though) and especially not a 9700.

also the ATI=HL2 thing doesn't apply when you're comparing a 9800xt and a 6800. the 6800 will stomp it

a 9800xt is faster but only by a little but costs alot more for a little faster. bad bang for the buck exactly.

Let's keep this civil. There's no need to bring up that crap again.

OC550, it's good to see you again, and I'm glad you didn't take that bait. -- Paul

Oh my...i thought he was talking about 6800GT vs 9800PRO -> XT the whole time...silly me :bang head

After looking at those charts of video card comparisions im still happy to be a proud owner of my 9800 PRO. As long as im getting above at least 60 fps and around 85 - 100 fps in CS im happy :D
if your only getting 85-100 in cs i WOULD be worried
