2 x 256MB + 512MB vs 2 x 512MB?

Well, I am going to be ordering a DFI Lanparty nF2 250Gb and 3000+ tommorow and here is my question. I have a job where I work for minimum wage and me being 15 my work time is limited to 18 hours a week and I average probably 13 a week so I am always on a budget when it comes to PC equipment. So here is my question, what are the advantages and disadvantages of the two setups? Assuming all the RAM modules were the same type but only different sizes.

The more ram you have (number of sticks) the more you have to hope that they will all clock about the same. That's about it. In your case, I would start with 2x256 SINGLE SIDED memory. Then as you can afford it, get two more single sided sticks.

Well I am debating over getting two 512MB sticks or getting one 512MB and then two more 256MB sticks. Also what do you mean by single sided?

memory IC's on one side of the module only.

Go with 2x512mb. The more ram sticks you add to the equation, the harder it is to maintain the same timings/speed when overclocking.

You should consider socket 939 3000+ instead. Only $5 more for OEM (over retail) and the MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum is barely more than the DFI board, then you could run dual channel and have future upgradability! but s754 is better than people let on, my setup feels alot faster than my intel did running @ 3.4ghz with dual channel.

Oh, my mistake. I wasn't thinking single channel because of the board in his sig. Get 2x512.

I would agree with DamienKC. While the DFI board is a real good overclocker it would be much better to go with socket 939 and get the 3000+ and you should be ablke to hit FX speeds with good parts.
