Mobile Cpu questions....

ok, i was lookin at mobile intel CPU's, the Pentium M's, and i saw that you can compare a 1.6ghz Pentium M to a P4 2.8ghz, and this is in a laptop, i just purchased Half Life 2 and the recommened CPU is a 2.4ghz and the min. is 1.2ghz so does that mean that the 1.6ghz CPU which is equivalent to the p42.8 will run HL2 like a 2.8ghz and not bog down like an older cpu that is like at 2.0ghz only?

I have a 1.6Ghz Pentium-M (Banias 1MB L2 core) laptop with Mobility Radeon 9600 64MB graphics, and (using a standard size mouse) you can game amazingly well on it, with a lot of eye-candy turned on at 1024x768. I dunno exactly how it would compare to my main rig (see sig) cuz it has a better videocard. HL2 will probably be a biatch on the most high-end systems, like Doom3, but if you plan on gaming on your laptop get a fast Pentium-M and a good Videocard. NOT one with shared memory to say the least!

Ok, well i just talked with a Tech Rep. at Intel, and he informed me to go with a p4 mobile instead, but sinse my order is already put through i couldnt change it for my lap. but he did inform me on good points on the P-M's they have a 1mb cache and mobile p4's have a 512k cache so it can make up alittle there and then too i am going to have 786 mb of ram and i am going to configure the lap with bootvis to help startup and msconfig to cut down the running programs and wype anything i do not need, and once i get rid of my desktop i am planning to save and get the 2.0ghz P-M to replace my coming 1.6P-M or maybe after X-mas intel will have released a 2.2P-M ......hopefully..... so hopefully when i install HL2 it will run fine and i wont lag because i have been waiting for it so much .....

There are 2 Mobile P4 versions;

- Mobile-P4 which is just your regular northwood with an extra pin and one-grade speedstep. There's one of these in our home laptop and it's either 2300Mhz or 1600Mhz with speedstep active.

- P4-M which is a special Mobile chip with advanced power saving and multiple speedstep gradations.

Any Pentium-M will most likely still outperform these P4 chips in gaming, will run cooler/quieter and have triple the battery life. My work laptop with 1.6Ghz Pentium-M is crunching BOINC/SETI whenever it's on AC power and the performance difference (average WorkUnit time) with the M-P4 2.3Ghz is so big I didn't even bother to install SETI on it anymore...
