My computer is really pissing me off. I've had this recurring problem where I'll be playing a game, any game, and it it will randomly slow down to like 2 fps for a second. Its basically like an elongated skip. The first time this problem happened, I reformatted and it was gone (I tried system restore but it didnt work). Then it started happening a few months later, and I tried playing around with a bunch of random settings, and eventually I shut off Windows Firewall and that somehow got rid of the problem. Now its a few months later, and the problem has started again and I dont know what to do. I need to get back to CS Source so someone help me!!! ;)

What AV scanner do you use?
And what kind of protection do you hvae from spyware?

I just defragged both drives twice and still have the problem. I updated Adaware and got rid of all spyware, and I checked to make sure no processes were clogging memory. Yet, still get the problem.

This problem occurs offline and online, NBA Live and CS.

My antivirus is F-Secure.

Try turning off your anti-virus. Also, is there any other hardware that is connected to the internet? Do you use ICS? how about a wireless/wired router?

Ace

I dont know what ICS is but yes I am hooked up to a wired router.

I dont think the AV is the problem as I've tried disabling it before.

Could this be some type of hardware problem? Overheating?

ICS = internet connection sharing

I am almost 100% sure its software as a reformat fixed all your problems.
grab "hijackthis" and let us know what it says.
As something is running in memory that is causing this.

Also to 100% rule out hardware, keep your computer at stock speeds while fixing this problem

017 is a possible hijack

i'd also get rid of the 016 gamespot on as that if i remember correct uses your computer as a server
The rest of 016 can also be nuked

08 objexts are not needed, so you might wana clean that up

02 is just a waste of RAM so nuke that as well

So i would clean up as much of that stuff as you can.
Also F-Secure seem to have alot running. Are you 100% sure that is causing any slowdowns?

Got rid of most of that stuff, but that doesnt seem to be making a difference...

I dont know I feel like something weird is causing this

It has to be one of the proccesses, it is usualy svchost.exe
I get triggered by plany of stuff, even network can couse this. I remember a guy who got the same problem when his computer was searching for an network drive which wasn't on the network no more.
Maybe it will point you in the right direction.

Ya but one time I closed pretty much every necessary process and the problem still happened. I dunno, I'll try again
