Ok, so I have a 2001FP and 2005FPW. First I want to say that to my knowledge both are in perfect working order. No "screen door" effect, bleeding, dead pixels that I can see, or any other defects that some people have.
Also, I am not very good at photography..
First lets start with a side by side from the front shot.
I also took some of the LCD with the game going. Same shot as the in-game ones I pasted.

As you can see, there are a few differences between the two LCD's other than the obvious panel difference. Weither or not the small, subtle changes make a difference is up to you. They really dont to me, other than the different buttons. The 2005's are smaller, sleeker, and dont have two bright LED's in your face. It also has a number for the connection it is using, which is nice if you change often. The Dell logo is also smaller, and sleeker looking on the 2005 vs. the 2001. Its a shiny silver, not a dull gray. As shown in the pics, the 2001's USB are on the left, and the 2005's is on the right. The 2001 has the USB symbol on the silver part of the panel, the 2005 has it back by the ports on the black. The 2001 uses a power brick, where as the 2005 doesnt. The 2001 does extend a lot higher than the 2005. The 2001's stand is also round, where as the 2005's is more square. You can interchange them though, I tried it. No idea why they did these small changes, most can be seen as pointless. I guess they had some reason though.
As far as games, and movies go, to be honest I cant really tell a difference. They both look great, I havent noticed any ghosting with either. As you can see, HL2 looks amazing in WS, and you can see more of the game. My frames are a little lower though, as you can see in 2 out of the 3 screen shots. The settings I used were all maxed out in the game, with reflect all selected. 4xAA and 8xAF selected in game, and the highest quality selected in the drivers.
Anyhow, I hope this helps those that are trying to decide on which to get. I was on the fence.. so I got both. First got the 2001, and was happy with it. But I really wanted a WS LCD. The Dellf game came up, and I got this 2005 too. When I was trying to pick which I wanted, I couldnt find a side by side comparison. Hopefully I helped someone.
Does Half-life 2 support 1680x1050 or are you forcing it into a different resolution? I like the idea of widescreen but that resolution seems weird (16:10 instead of normal 16:9 widescreen). Just wondering how the compatibility is with most programs and games, and if you are having to use the non-native resolution? Any feedback would be great
Yes HL2 does support 1680x1050 natively in 16:10. It also supports 1280x768, and 768x480 in 16:10.
WS for web browsing is awesome too. Really looks good. As do movies and TV shows. Im really very happy with the LCD. You can get almost any game to run in WS too, with a .cfg or .ini edit. Then adjusting the FOV.
I'm very surprised to see that the wide screen actually shows more than the 4:3 panel. I thought it would just stretch the image but you can see more detail (horizontally) on the wide screen vs the 4:3.
I didnt notice that it does actually show more of the game instead of just stretching the screen out. This is actually really cool, I think I now want a WS monitor too. Thanks for making this post fallguy .
Also I am glad to see that you can make almost any game into widescreen mode.
Wow....that 2005 looks sweet, especialy for gaming. I'm a dual monitor guy myself and have 2 17" CRT's....been wanting to upgrade to 2 2001's but don't have 1k+! but now I'm wondering if I should get 2 2005's....hmmm
Are those widescreens really that good for browsing the web? You'd think you'd want something tall....especialy at 1600x1200 res and whatever WS native is....
Oh and BTW, what's make and model of that desk, it looks pretty sweet!
Have you noticed any "tearing" on the screen while playing games. I'll be getting a new monitor soon, and my current LCD tears when playing game like HL2 and FarCry and this is something I want to avoid....very annoying.
Also, on the Dell website it says that the 2001FP has component inputs, Does it? I don't see any in your picture? Do you need an adapter or something?
