If your Vidcard stinks, play this game!

http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=4403

Castle of the Winds, plus expansion (now free, used to be shareware).

God I loved this game in the DOS/windows 3.1 days, and its still great...

just thought I'd share a personal gem i haven't seen touted anywhere else

EDIT: nifty quirk about this game: the help files are a fun read! check them out as they've got a lot of nifty side info, and explain the game pretty well

I don't think so Quattro, I only get 20 fps when I play this game, it's pretty hardcore! You might get 30 fps if you're lucky, I dont know....

I don't see why not. Something has got to do good on this game, it's just so graphically intense

I think the minium ram required is 512mb... But even with 1gb it feels jerky.

YEah, my computer crashes everytime I play and gives me a "Computer resources are not sufficient." I think it's time for a U.S.E.R change.

That screenshot on the webpage makes me think back to the days of simfarm and simcity.

I love playing ancient classics with my beasty machine.
I thinkit's amazing when I play games that are only 5 years old. When we first saw them we all thought WOW and had to upgrade our video cards, and now I play them and my machine just eats them.

here's a quick rundown for those who hate to read instructions (is this self defeating then?):

use the numpad to move (makesure numlock is off)
s to search
r to rest
R to rest long enough to recover mana
i for inventory
hold shift and press any direction to walk as far in any direction as is possible until you encounter something (usually a wall) instantaneously

i'm glad so many like this game - it really is a gem isn't it?

be sure to check out the bestiary/spell info sections in the help files... very nifty stuff

Now the whole "will my super computer play this" and "it taxes my uber (insert component)" was funny the first 6 or 7 times, but how about a serious question...

Any idea if anyone has ported this to Windows CE? I don't think there is a Windows 3.1 emulator out, but if possible this would be cool for the Pocket PC. I've got some cool old C64 stuff and there are DOS emu's out there, but this and other retro Windows (original) games would be sweet.

hm i can't say i know since i've only played this back in the day in windows 3.1, and i'm playing through it again now in xp home...

i wish i could help you more ocnoob, but i don't really know anything about CE...

dunno if anyone noticed, but you can use ANY icon for your character... i'm thinking of making an ATI logo battling it out with a green dragon or something ^^

i definitely think that if you want older games that are really good, you should go for quest for glory V or sanitarium. both of those are amazing games that will run on even the worst of (modern) computers.
