Laptop plus WATER = I think I need a new laptop

Well, I love my girlfriend to death, but she happened to knock over and entire glass of water right on top of the laptop. I thought that it was just on the outside, so I turned it on. It made it to the windows screen, then I heard a sizzling noise. I picked it up and water came running out of the pcmcia slot, the air vent for the heatsink, and just about everywhere else. I immediately pulled the battery out. I took off some of the plastics, and the motherboard was wet, the hard drive was wet, and the keyboard was wet

I have let it dry for an entire day now, but when I try to turn it on, all I get are blinking lights and a faint clicking noise. Is it safe to say that it is dead? I can replace the motherboard and cpu for about $150. Don't know if I should start there or what.

Ouch....sorry to hear it.

How much would it cost for a whole new laptop VS the 150 for the mobo and cpu?

How many other parts could concievable need replacing?

There's no reason to think that it would work if you replaced the cpu and motherboard, the water might have damaged other parts, and then you'll have spent the money for nothing. I would just sell it. A computer store will pay quite a bit for a non-working newer laptop.

Well did u remove the parts as soon as u've seen the problem? well if you've removed and let it cleaned and dried enough then the mobo could have survived. I'm afraid the hdd cause water might have gone through the breathing hole. But you can save your motherboard let it dry properly.

P.S. the most bad thng you've done is switch on the laptop which is something never to be done when you know liquid had spilt. BTW hope you'll make it over

Good lesson for you is to NEVER turn on anything like that until it is COMPLETELY dried out which may take days. I would try to get a new motherboard for it and see if it works.

Before you whip out the wallet, try this.... Disassemble everything, and hit everything with a hair dryer for a minute or two, and get everything really good and dry. Reassemble, and give it one more go.

If it still doesn't want to run, then spend, or sell...

Well, thanks guys. I will try disassembling it. I honestly thought there was no water in it. I see no way it could have gotten inside from the top, but it I guess it did. Learned my lesson the hard way I guess.

I worry that maybe even the screen is dead?

I would say its very unlikely, most likely just shorted some component on the motherboard. If it spilled right on the keyboard too you might want to get a new one. But it would try motherboard first, which the cpu is probably soulderd to, if your lucky its socketed. If a motherboard change doesn't work and the cpu is socketed it might be the culprit.

next time don't just let it dry before reassembeling it but give it an alcohol bath. it will dry faster and remove anything left by the water.

Heh, I just posted in another thread, but when fan in the top of my pc became a sprinkler system, it went completly dead as well. After an alcohol bath and 24hrs of drying, it works perfectly.
