Anyway to suspend the console

I leave my PC running all the time but when My sister wants to play sims 2 the system slows down alot (bigpackets=on) is there any way i can suspend the core (or at least make shortcuts to shut down then restart the core).

Thanks,
g35

PS 1800 points since i started folding (2 weeks ago)

I believe Ctrl-C will shut down the program. Then you could just make a shortcut to the program to start it up again when you are done.

If its running as a service, two simple bat files could be used to start and stop folding from running in a graceful fashion.

I just right-click on my desktop, and then create a new shortcut pointing to net.exe. Then just edit the target line to make it something like this:
%windir%\System32\net.exe stop FAH

Then I choose an icon by clicking Change Icon in the shortcut properties, and then browsing to the directory FAH is installed and selecting the icon. I like to use the red gear icon for a start shortcut and the gear with the yellow strike out as stop.

You can also make a shortcut to start the service by changing the stop above to start. (net start FAH)

With both shortcuts on your desk, your sister can start and stop the folding service simply by double clicking them.

You can set the timered checkpoints to as low as 3 minutes so you'll lose very little progress for stopping/restarting.

Will CowboyShane's method turn on FAH with all its options (i.e. -advmethods, -verbosity, etc.)

I see you discovered the answer, but just to clarify for anyone lurking. Wedo's one click service install sets the parameters for the folding service in the registry.

This is really easy if using the one click...

SC Stop FAH <--- put this in notepad and save it as FAHStop.bat
SC Start FAH <--- put this in notepad and save it as FAHStart.bat

Top will stop the service, bottom will start it up again.

If it were Linux, you can suspend (without killing) a runnning app within a console shell by hitting ctrl-z

I wish Windows had something to do the same beside the ctrl-c which terminates the current process on both O/S's. Linux shells also have ctrl-\ which is a more severe way of killing off a process that won't quit from a "polite" ctrl-c

Have you tried it, and if so, does it work? I've always been curious to see if it worked with the f@h client but never bothered to test it. It would seem to me that if you did it on the console shell, it would suspend the client process but the core process would continue running, using up all the cpu. The way to do it would be to send a SIGSTOP to the core process, but then I think you also have to suspend the client process. If you just suspend the core and leave the client running, I'm pretty sure the client will give a client-core communications error.

EDIT: nevermind, suspending the parent process suspends the child processes as well

Actually I had forgotten all about there being two separate processes when I sent my post

I had to try it myself after reading your response, and sure enough, suspending the parent FAH4Console_Linux.exe process did indeed also suspend its child FahCore_65.exe process too. This is on a SuSE Linux machine, I presume all flavors of *nix behave the same as well.
