The Ongoing Mod of my 5700 Ultra

Yeah so here goes. also figured I should post in the correct forums I saw all you guys with the huge CPU heatsinks on your graphics cards and I had heatsink envy (they can probably perscribe something for that nowadays, but I regress). Luckily I just stumbled upon a few old computers of which I could pillage and plunder! And came across 2 fans which were old CPU sinks.

Link: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...es/TheFans.jpg

So I have 2 choices either an old Intel sink from a ~900mhz cpu or the Antec sink which is from a x486. I suppose though as JigPu said in another tread I posted about this "Why use an inferior sink?" Yeah good call. I dont know, but it would look badass

Also for reference, anyone who used a cpu cooler plugged it into a "system fan" type slot correct?

And then pictures of the Card itself:

(I think the 2nd picture came out better, they have been darkened to reduce glare, Ill get better ones once I get it out of the case)

Also, can anyone recommend good websites for Heatsinks (gpu memory) and arctic silver epoxy. And while I'm at it, el wire becuase a case mod will follow, but thats a different thread...

So far, I just removed the current Heatsink and added some arctic cooler ceramique for a temp drop in the mean time. Glad it wasnt epoxied on, dont have 800 grit paper and I wouldnt want to have scratched that GPU thing is freaken shiny! Bling bling! ... Yeah I wont do that again.

...your links don't work...

...listen to JigPu, 486=dinosaur, 900mhz=caveman, cavemen were far more evolved than dinosaurs, go with the caveman heatsink. As for the CPU cooler/fan plugged into system fan type header, go right ahead, if the plug fits, use it. My Voodoo 3000 I slapped a PII 266 heatsink(a third of it anyhow) onto the GPU, with the original fan on it, then upgraded the fan, just made sure the new one would plug into the same header. There's a 60mm fan on my CPU right now, plugged into the mobo header, no big deal...

...I buy thermal grease, ramsinks, heatsinks, etal local, most smaller specialty computer shops carry them, someone else probably can give you some online links. Mod on dude...

...pics work now, no offence meant, now you have to work on your camera work, back away a bit, your flash is killing the pics. Maybe shut the flash off, and light up the card from another source, like a desk lamp. Constructive criticism Roofles, take for what it's worth, the paper it's printed on...

...definitely go with the 900 HSF, the PII would cause you all kinds of problems, including new ramsinks, unless you cut it down to the size of the 900, which would be a waste of a HSF combo, the 900 is already the right size. If you want more cooling, aside from the new HSF, consider mounting a 120mm fan in the side of your case when you mod it(your case), blowing directly onto your vidcard. Mount a 120 inside your case, for all that matters. A huge HSF like that PII, will just cause more problems than it's worth. BTW, make sure that 900 cooler doesn't contact anything when it's sitting on the GPU...

Hah, all good man, I didnt think you meant anything negative by it. Ill post later my plans for the whole project. My case sits on the ground and the card is really close to the floor and under my desk in my dimly lit basement. So I figured if I didnt use a flash you might not be able to see a thing

But yeah Im definately looking into ramsinks, but that order will go along with the rest of the case modding stuff. Also I have a ton of fans laying around that Im looking at playing with. So many infact I might hook up another psu to run them all.

...I do believe there's a "sticky" in here, somewhere, about running a separate PSU, makes life easier when someone else has already done it. Unless you're looking for the "extra" customization of two PSU's, I'd suggest just picking up a 520V PSU or so, depending on how many fans you want to run. It would take up less room, but then again, it wouldn't be so customized. By the same token, you could send your case out to be professionally painted, or do it yourself. Do it yourself, and it's guaranteed to be a one of a kind. Chevy can give a car "custom" paint, but it's all done by the same robot, know what I mean?...

...I'm lookin forward to pics as you get your parts together...

Anyone know where I can find the volt mod for the 5700's ? That will be in the works but not until I can afford a new graphics card if I burn one...
