6600 256mb s-video to rca adapter, Help!!

My dad bought a retail xfx (cheap brand) 6600 256mb. The only thing, is it didn't come w/ any s-video cables. I've read around and I've seen that the early ones didn't come w/ any cables, but now the newer ones do. This is were the problem lies.

Our tv doesn't have s-video imputs on the back. We didn't think this would be any problem. We plugged in a s-video to rca adapter into the card, then a rca to the tv.

We then set everything up, and got NO picture (yes I enabled it threw the nview options). We then tried a different s-video to rca adapter, and got a black and white picture w/ lines going through it.

I then took a look a the s-video adapters and they are all differnt! I had (i believe) a 9pin one, 7pin, and a 4pin (one w/ the rect. box on it).

We used 2 adapters my dad had (one from 9800 and 1 from a older AIW card) and both ones that came w/ my x800.

So does anyone know where I can buy a s-video to rca adapter that will work w/ the xfx 6600 256mb (pci-e)?

It's not the tv either, ps2, etc work fine plugged in.

I found this site, http://www.svideo.com/svideo.html but there is too many things and I don't know much about s-video...

I BELIVE (my dad is out of town) that our tv has a scart adapter on the back. I know he bought some wierd looking thing, and took a dvi cable and soldered all the wires to pins, but the comp. wouldn't recognize it as another monitor.

EDIT: If you don't want to read all that, I just need a s-video to rca adapter that will work w/ xfx6600 256mb (non-gt)

Thanks

I heard this can happen if the res is too high. On my old ATI AIW card even if I had the res above 800x600 the tv out would either be 800x600 or 640x480.

Try lowering the resolution first. If you need to get to 640x480 on xp just create a .bat file in notepad with the word "pause" in it. Under pause you can put "Exit". Then set it to run under compatibility mode with the lower res as well as "close window on exit" or something like that. When you run the program it will lower the res and leave a window that says "Press any key to continue". Just minimize and have fun. When you are finished you can open the window and hit a key. It will run the exit command and the res will change back. I called it mine "tv.bat" at the school I worked at.

Go back to the one that had you at black and white and switch the output in NView from S-Video to RCA or vice versa... I think that may work, but haven't tried it. The reason I say that is that when I capture video using the S-Video in on my 5950 I will get black and white if I don't change the source from Composite to S-Video. It has no problem getting the signal just decoding it properly. I used a converter for my old Ti4200 I got it fron a local Radioshack and it worked fine in color. You may also want to check that you are set for the correct format -- NTSC (US and Japan) vs PAL (Everyone else)
PAL will display on an NTSC TV as a shrunken Black and white picture.

Great ideas!!!

I read about that in some forum, so I tired it, and the display went completly black. I have a feeling the s-video to rca adapter isn't choosing the right pins to convert to rca.

I had the resolution set to 800x600, I don't remember going below that. Desktop res. was at 1280x1024 (lcd).

My dad bought this card so this comp. could take over the tivo's functions.....really starting to suck!!!

I told him to go w/ ati :P

LOL, well don't diss on NVidia just yet. I've had some experience w/ setting up a TV connection. I even connected s-video => RCA on a 25y/o 26" TV my grandfather gave to me.

What I would recommend is downloading a program called TVTool. It has tons of functions and options that will get your TV working. I used it w/ my old GF4 Ti4400 and it worked flawlessly.

The TV definitely needs to be at a certain resolution and a certain REFRESH RATE, which is often over-looked. Set the RR to the lowest possible rate you can, something around 60hz should be fine and not damage the TV.

Good luck though, definitely try that TVTool app.

I was just joking about nvidia I was about to buy a 6800gt, before I found my hidden -pe

I just never had any probs on my 8500 w/ tv out. Just pluged it in, and wala!

But I'll go seach for this program and give it a try! I'll also take a look at the refreshrate and resolution. My dad has just given up on it, but I'd like to fix it for him, you know, be a nice son

Thanks for the tips!

EDIT: I think I forgot to say he's running Windows XP Media Center Edition, if that makes any difference

XP MCE might make a difference, but you'd think the drivers are the same as regular XP. I don't know, I don't have MCE. Report back on your progress though, bro.
