Question for those that have hurt themselves

About a year and a half ago, (not detailing all circumstances, but suffice it to say, it nearly ended up in another young man being badly hurt), in a fit of anger after my parents threw me out of the house to keep me from badly hurting him (after he threatened my mother, which i didn't take very well), i dug my fingers into a huge rock (the rock weighed in later at about 204lbs), then threw it like a baseball. On the throw, i heard something rip that sounded like paper. Ignoring it, and as the pain hadn't hit me yet, i tried to do it again. The second throw got 3/4 as far (about 15 feet vs. 20 on the first throw). It was then that the pain hit me.

I realized that in my anger, i had done something VERY stupid and had badly damaged my shoulder. The next day, i couldnt' even get out of bed. In the year and a half since, its only gotten worse, and due to screw ups at the doctor's office (and stupid insurance that won't let me make an appointment, they have to make the appointment for me), i haven't been able to see a specialist.

Problems: can't even lift my arm under its own power. I shoot a gun, arm goes out of socket. hit a punching bag, arm goes out of socket. have no grip left in either hand (i broke 4 grip strength testers 3 years before it happened at a sports physical, now i can barely make the needle move on one). My right arm goes limp suddenly every now and then. People who have felt my shoulder during a massage to help me feel better have said that the muscle doesn't feel right, like its 'missing' something.

My question is, have any of you done something similar? Not the incident, but have hurt a joint in a similar manner? What were the diagnoses? I finally got clearance to go see a doctor so that he can get me an appointment with a specialist, but was wondering if anyone out there in the community has had something similar happen, and what was done about it?

i know i have some arthritis in the shoulder, but i expected that after a similar injury to my left knee from wrestling in highschool (ripped everything clean off the joint). But i regained full use of my knee in less than 8 months. I can barely use my right shoulder/arm after 1 1/2 years.

told ya, i couldnt' for a year and a half.... too expensive to pay for, and the insurance won't pay unless the insurance itself prescribes it... and its hard to convince them that it is indeed a necessary medical emergency/procedure.

i just have to get a date set, and i can go, but am wondering, if anyone has had something similar happen, and what were they told? I want to have an idea of what i might be getting myself into, rehab-wise.

You have to be really ****ing assertive with insurance companies. Lots of astersisks and ****. I'm not kidding man, I know people that work for insurance companies(medical) and you have to yell, and let them know. Threaten them with court, this sounds pretty serious.

Sounds like you ripped your rotator cup and have some pinched nerves.

My brother tore all of the ligaments in his ankle and still has complications. It all depends on what was damaged and how severely. You definitely have some nerve compression or damage. You need to jump on that quickly or your muscle mass will start to deplete. Something that happened to my dad because he slept on an airplane while leaning on an armrest.

For the pain I recommend Ibuprofen or if that doesn't help try Tylenol Extra Strength. To reduce the arthritis symptoms I recommend trying to get a prescription for Feldine (also called Piroxicam, you can only take it once a day). It does wonders for injury related arthritis reactions.

I would have to agree with Cerberus on the torn rotator cuff. 204 lbs will definetly eff up your arm if you throw it like a baseball. Heck, a shotput will eff up your arm, and that only weighs, what, 10 lbs?

Here's a site that has links to rotator cuff injuries and such, might wanna check it out:

So... you threw the rock, fscked up your shoulder, never went to the doctor... how the hell did you find out how much the rock weighed afterwards?

I always like to hear about the crazy manly things us geeks can do... like overhand-throw a 204lbs rock 20'. =D

just back from tthe docs. i'd gone to the docs when it happened, was told it was a slight muscle rip. went a few months ago when it got worse, was told the rip was about half done. today, i was told it was totally ripped off, and that i need to go for an MRI within the week, probably surgery within the month.

Unfortunately, this means i can't work for like 6 months (the timeline i was given till i'd be good enough to work again) and that i'll hafta end up on welfare or something when me and the future Mrs. get married next month.

i found out how much it weighed because i asked one of my bros to sit it on a scale. BIG motherf*******. Normally, iit woulda taken me both arms to throw it that far, but at the time, i was boilin' angry, had been kicked out of the house for trying to rip a guy's head off.... so i grabbed it, and threw it.

the rock was outside in my mother's rock garden. it was one of the smaller rocks (and the only one i could pick up one handed).

what happened.... i alluded to it in the first post. a guy had been staying with us for over a year (he was an orphan). He started to get violent. He tried hurtin' everyone but my mom, and he ended up gettin' hurt back. When he turned on my mom, i went insanely violent. To save him and to let me gain my sanity back, i was bodily thrown out of the house by my dad. In my anger, i was blind to what i was doing, so i grabbed the rock, and threw it as hard as i could. That's where it all started.
