2001 Grand Am GT - automatic (probably selling it for real this time come Spring...most likely replacing with another automatic, Mercury Marauder, unless I decide to spring for a new Mustang GT (just I'm not into the whole new car thing with depreciation and all...))

1990 Mustang GT - manual

1965 Triumph Spitfire - manual (I know cause it's on my garage floor...

BTW guys, I would encourage all of you to learn and start buying more manual transmission cars. I can't speak for Europe, but in the U.S. sales of stick shifts are down horrendously. Each year they account for less and less of the market.

There's chatter of impending doom in car magazines that one day manufacturers will realize it's not cost effective to engineer new manaul transmissions anymore and design their new cars as automatics only. And "manual shift modes" do not make up for the lack of a clutch.

And im sure he will tell you how friggin clumsy it feels. It would be like trying to shift with YOUR left hand....sure I can do it, but it feels terrible and clumsy.

I agree. It is a shame. The new Ford Fusion was supposed to be more of a drivers car, but they spoiled that by not offering the manual with the V6 and the automatic supposedly downshifts on its own when slowing down so there is "no need for a manual gate for the automatic."

In 10 years here in the U.S. everyone will probably be driving around boaty floaty cars with CVT's and hybrids. Everything will probably be by wire. Steer by wire so you cant do anything stupid, brake by wire, throttle by wire.

Although, manuals are slightly coming back with the cars. The Acura TSX is a newer car that is offered with a manual, at least Ford is offering a manual on the Fusion with the Duratec 23, Subaru now offers an Outback with the top of the line engine with a manual. Even Mercedes is starting to offer manuals. The C class and the new SLK can be had with a manual. Hopefully this trend will only get better and we won't see the end any time soon. I hope.

I'm left handed but personally would feel shifting LEFT handed is clumsy. I have no problems shifting with my right hand. Not sure why -- some things I can only do with my right hand...for instance, I use my right hand to use my mouse, but cannot use my left. On the otherhand, I cannot eat or write with my right hand at all...

Automatic - 96 Dodge Ram 4x4 ClubCab Sport 360(5.9l)- Crower 1.7:1 roller rockers, fastman 52mm throttlebody, mopar pcm, Airraid intake, Flowmaster American thunder exhaust, free flow cat, 4.56 gears front and back with a detroit locker in the back and a Dana44 limited slip and posi-lock in the front. 285/75 16 (33x10.5) Firestone MT's, Rancho RS5000 shocks, soon to be replaced with Billstein 5100's and a 3inch lift that sitting in the garage.

Manual - 99 Dodge Neon Sport Coupe - 2.0 DOHC 5 spd. Iceman CAI, Dynomax 2.5 inch cat back exhaust, Crane #12 cams, PT Cruiser valve train,AFX PCM, 55mm throttle body, ported/polished intake manifold, MPx underdrive pully, Mopar short throw shifter, mopar sway bars, deyeme racing motor/tranny mounts. Most of the parts are being removed and sold and the stock parts I have are going back on because the car is for sale. Its more work but I can make more money this way, I already have a buyer for the aftermarket stuff.

The car's being replaced with a 2002 Ford Excursion limited 4x4 7.3 liter Power stroke turbo diesel. This will be the first time in a long time I have not had at least one manual automobile.

Regarding shifting:

I am right handed, I write and use a mouse with my right hand. I use my knife in my left hand however (same as my dad).

Shifting with my left hand comes naturally. In fact I prefer keeping my right hand on the wheel for better control of the steering.

i personally like manuals for bad road conditions (like what i have here nearly all winter)..... but when yuou can't move your right arm (see 100% tear of tendons and ligaments in above post)..... you are limited to what you can drive.

Exactly. That's the main reason I want everyone to post their locations because I know most people in the US drive automatics. Kinda sad I think...

Considering how some people drive it may be for the best for some people to have an auto. There are a few bad things about manual is its hard to eat, talk on the phone, and people that are say new to driving or people that try to be cool end up putting unecessary wear on their car. So an unsuspecting joe gets stuck with hundreds in repairs if they are unfortunate enough to buy the car.

Same here . Well except for that using the knife with the left hand thing .

Another thing which people have not mentioned is that manual cars often are lighter and unlesss you are racing and pushing stuff to the redline all of the time , then a manual will in most cases be more fuel effficient .

As for me , I drive a manual 4WD , turbo 2.0l Subaru WRX and I love it . The only automatic that Subaru used to offer in the WRX range was as an option with the hatchback . ( Presently , 2005/02/01 , my car is in my avatar picture )

Well I currently have an automatic but man I wish I had a manual. Oh well my current vehicle kind of makes up for it(68 Mercury Monteray with a 390 and a C6 with only 70k miles).

Also I'm a lefty but I think its really easy to drive a manual becuase I use my left hand on the steering wheel. Of course the downside to this is if you have a bench seat and your GF is with you its not as easy to have her sit in the middle.
