Ok I finally installed madrake 10.1 last night. )Its already crashed once on me during load.) any way my problam is it says im lucent win modem is not supported so I am thinking I need a generic driver. Can any one help me out here?

It used to be that Win modems were not supported at all by Linux. I think some will work with newer installs, but I am not entirely sure. You can try going to the modem manufacturer's web site and look for one there, or you can search for one on Google. I don't think there is a generic driver for Win modems yet, but I might be wrong.

Winmodems are known to be a problem....I wimped out the few times I needed a modem in linux and found hardware modems to use. ;)

But, many are more stubborn in that regard, to the extent that there is a website devoted to getting them to work:
linmodems.org.

I have no experience at actually DOING it, but it looks to me like you might find some info there.

Good luck!

There may or may not be drivers for your modem. Do you know what chipset it uses? You masy be able to find linux drivers for it (linmodems.org, as previously stated is a good place to get started). Another option would be to buy a hardware modem.

Ok, heres what I know about it. its PCI based(Though I dont think ive even seen a intergrated one so you probaly geussed that, could be usb maybe). Its model number is f-1156iv/a3 . There are a few other numbers but I think they are maunly bar code type things. Any way thats really all I can tell about it hardware wise. If needed I can redownload everest(been meaning to do that) and I am geussing it will give me some more info on it. Linux is useless to me without internet so thanks for any help.

Not sure what that is, from what I can tell (google) its some sort of a PCI device information dispalyer? Is -V a spiecel version though?

-v is a flag that tells lspci to be more verbose. Here's me running the command:

Ok a few questions. First off you do mean type that into linuxes command promt right? Also where is it at I tried the thing in the taks bar(looked to me like command promt) but it just said file not found. I also tried run(also in linux) Do I have to download it? Also is there like a linux explorer? Like the one in windows(my computer) So I can view my HDD. Again thanks for the help.

Ok doubt it will work but I will go try cmd in linux run.

I don't know what linux run you're talking about. Are you using kde? If so, try to find Konsole somewhere. I think it's under Utilities in the "K" menu. Sorry, I've only been using KDE for about a month, before that I used IceWM (I'm probably switching back, too). I'm also not very familiar with mandrake.

I would suggest, however, that you try to find and get more comfortable with the command line in linux. I'm sure there are some good tutorials online (it's quite useful).

Ok , I cant use my pc for a little bit but later tonight I will try this again. Also thanks for your help I relieze these questions are very noobish. Just thiss stuff I take advantage of in windows I have no idea to even really start up in linux.

Ok sorry this is taking me so long to even do something as simple as run a command. As I said before though these things seem simple to me in windows but here I am lost. Ok now I tried what you said and some how screwed it up. Here it what I got can you tell what i did wrong?

[alec@localhost alec]$ ~ /sbin/Ispci -v
bash: /home/alec: is a directory
[alec@localhost alec]$ cat/[proc/pci
bash: cat/[proc/pci: No such file or directory
[alec@localhost alec]$ cat/proc/pci
bash: cat/proc/pci: No such file or directory
[alec@localhost alec]$ ~/sbin/Ispci
bash: /home/alec/sbin/Ispci: No such file or directory
[alec@localhost alec]$ /sbin/Ispci
bash: /sbin/Ispci: No such file or directory
[alec@localhost alec]$ ~ $/sbin/ispci
bash: /home/alec: is a directory
[alec@localhost alec]$ sbin/ispci
bash: sbin/ispci: No such file or directory
[alec@localhost alec]$ $/sbin/Ispci -v
bash: $/sbin/Ispci: No such file or directory
[alec@localhost alec]$ ~ $ /sbin/ ispci
bash: /home/alec: is a directory
[alec@localhost alec]$ Ispci
bash: Ispci: command not found
[alec@localhost alec]$ /Ispci
bash: /Ispci: No such file or directory
[alec@localhost alec]$ ~/Ispci
bash: /home/alec/Ispci: No such file or directory
[alec@localhost alec]$ ~$/cat/proc/pci
bash: ~$/cat/proc/pci: No such file or directory
[alec@localhost alec]$ ~ cat/proc/pci
bash: /home/alec: is a directory
[alec@localhost alec]$ cd

By the way this was in Konsol. Also I noticed your $ is in a diffrent spot then mine. I tried "cd" to go back to basic but for some reason my starting point has the $ at the start.

It's /sbin/lspci (with a lowercase L). There is also a " " between cat and /proc/pci. cat is the command, /proc/pci is what you're "catting." As far as the $ thing goes, the bash prompt is fairly configurable, you can make it look like whatever you want.

Ok I tried the sbin/lspci - v thing with no luck again. Though the other one worked. Sorry if this dosnt give enough info I will go try the other way again if needed.

[alec@localhost alec]$ /sbin/lspci
bash: /sbin/lspci: No such file or directory
[alec@localhost alec]$ sbin/lspci
bash: sbin/lspci: No such file or directory
[alec@localhost alec]$ cat /proc/pci

Ok cool thanks a lot I will try them. If you dont mind me asking what did you do? google like some model number or something? Just wondering because this may come in handy in the future.
