Think I can get this cheap usb-to-serial (RS-232) cable to work?

Back home, I have a serial modem. Do you think I could get it to work with this cable:

under linux (I use gentoo).

I highly doubt it, but I'm curious if anyone has any expierence with this sort of cable. I seen usb-to-serial adapters before, but this look slike just a straight cable. Wierd, isn't it?

It depends on if the things is standards-compliant would be my guess.

Just about every piece of hardware I have tried that complies to whatever industry standard exists for that component type works fine in linux.

Unfortunately, most of the cheap stuff is NOT compliant. Anything that states that it requires a specific version of windows ONLY often has non-compliant drivers...
I'd call it a crapshoot.
