Asus p5a recognizes 256 MB DIMM as 128MB

I just bought a 256 MB PC133 DIMM (non DDR SDRAM) from newegg and put it into an Asus p5a (super 7) motherboard. It recognizes it as a 128mb DIMM. According to the manual, the board will work with 256 MB DIMMS, but I can't make it recognize it as such.

I pulled another 256 MB DIMM from another comp and tried it out, and it also was recognized as 128 MB.

I am running the latest beta bios (from 1999).

Is this a known problem, and is there any way around it? Am I missing something dumb?

Thanks.

are these 256mb modules single or double sided? if they are single sided, they are probably too dense to be read as 256mb.
