Cyclical Redundancy Check (CRC) Error on HDD

Hi there,

I decided to back up my main 200gb Western Digital disk tonight, by copying its contents to my external Maxtor 250gb hdd. When transferring, I got the message "Cyclical Redundancy Check (CRC) Error" and the transfer stopped. I ignored the files that it had problems with, and was able to rescue nearly all of the data on the disk.

I downloaded "WinDiag" tool from the Western Digital site, and the drive failed the "quick test", so I wrote all zeros on the drive (got no errors at all doing this) and started again - the drive now passes the "quick" and "extended" tests.

However, I'm concerned that the drive may have bad sectors, and that the tool simply "relocated" them so they are ignored in future. Is there a tool I can use to show if the drive actually has any "relocated" bad sectors? Or is it likely that the tool has simply "fixed" the problem?

Cheers,
Binny.

don't know of any tool like that.

I'd be careful with that drive, it sounds like it mighty be failing.

What error code did the drive give you when it failed the test the first time?

Look into a program called norton disk doctor. I'm not sure if it does that, but it would prolly be worth a shot.

Ok thx... will check it out.
Think I might just RMA the drive though, as I believe it's still under warranty.

Ta,
Binny.
