Question Battlefield 1942 and Logitech Wingman Extreme

I cannot for the life of me get the joystick to work in Battlefield,I am new to this gaming stuff,can someone point me in the right direction?
I have it calibrated in the control panel,but when I go into the game and try to change key settings to the joystick nothing happens,its like it isnt seeing the joystick..Thanks for the help..
