Cheep/free traffic shaping

Is there an easy way (without buying a cisco router) to priortize traffic by ports? I have a decent connection to the net, but I really want to be able to ssh to my box at home, without being effected by my roomates uploading stuff ot the net. I know I can do this with a cisco router/switch, but is there any windows or *nix programs that can do this. I know LARTC can, but I can't figure out how.

Thanks

You could probably achieve this by using smoothwall with some added on mods or I think clarkconnect has a bandwidth limiter also. You'd have to have a spare junker computer to run these.

Or you could get a Linksys wrt54g or GS model router and flash it with the firmware found HERE

YOu can read up on it at THESE forums

Did you read this?

Failing that, you can try pf in OpenBSD.
