A Math type question that is impossible...

Ok here it is..

3 men go out to eat. the bill comes to exactly 30 bucks. so they each pay 10 dollars.

The waitress takes the money to the back, realizes that there was a special, so their bill came to 25 bucks instead.

trying to figure out a way to split 5 bucks between 3 people, she just decided to give each man one dollar back, and keep 2 dollars for herself, since she did not get a tip.

So now, each man ends up paying 9 dollars. thats 27 dollars total. she keeps 2 dollars. thats a total of 29 dollars. WHERE DID THE OTHER DOLLAR GO?????

literally, my friend at work asked this, and we are all stumped. its not a riddle, it seems to be one of those math questions that can't be done.

anyone have any idea's on this at all???

You're serious?

It's 30 minus her two is 28.

Everyone gives her a ten. The rightful change at this point is one dollar and sixty sixty cents.(1.66X3=5... the 5 that is owed)

She decides to give back three of this, and keep two. The new change is three dollars(1x3) and two removed(3+2=5)

But she gave each man back $1...

So she had $30.. ended up being $25 went back and gave each man $1, there are 3 men.
$29
$28
$27
So there goes $3, she keeps $2.
$30-$3=$27

But then you think about it... each man ended up paying $9
$10-$1 (the $1 they got back)
$9*3 men=$27
$27 paid in total by the men...

Waiter kept $2
$27+$2=$29

Where in the heck did that extra $1 go?

For some reason there is something wrong with my work.. because I think everyone can agree that $25+$3+$2=$30

you cant add the 2 dollars on you need to subtract them to get $25. The question really is invalid...

and 27+2 = 29.

if you think about it THAT way, then the math doesn't add up correctly.

in a real life situation, this would work just fine. but it doesn't work on paper ( when thinking about it as each man paying 9 dollars, which in actuality they did after getting the 1 dollar back )

no that math is wrong simply you are giving one discount then adding the other on. You need to do the # of people times the original payment then subtract the $3 from it they saved and you get a total cost of $27 for them. The 2 dollars are already in that...

Pay 9? They didn't pay nine because the whole meal only costed $25, remember? They each paid 8.33, they each paid an extra .66 for a tip(.66 times three = 2) and they each got a dollar back.

@tom you are making this way too complex and yes they each paid $9. So their total cost was $27 not $29 because that would be giving the waitress $4 instead of $2 and she sounds sleazy already

30 for the meal..then they get three back

they pay 9 dollars each ...27 dollars

they paid 2 for tip...so 27-2=25..that's what they had to pay

In one way that I tried the math added up but in another way it didn't.Here is the one that works: 30/3= $10 per man, subtract 5 from total 25/3=8.33 per man, give 3 back and keep 2. 25+3+2=30

The way it doesn'y work: 3 men each pay $10 (assume this is all the money that they have n their wallet, each man recieves $1 now they each have $1, net cost per man appears to be (10-1=9), (9x3= 27), (27+2= 29)?

The three men end up with $3 and the restaraunt ends up with $25 for the meal and $2 for the waitress, 3+25+2= 30

Thats the only way I can rationalize it.

25/3 = $8 (1/3)
8 (1/3) + 1 != 9
each man paid 9 (1/3)

Okay... so it was 30.

Each man pays 10.

She gives them back three.

30(money given by men)-3(what the waitress returned)= 27(total money left)

She kept two for herself

27(after she gave the money back)-2(what she kept for tip)=25 (the bill as a special)

27(total including the two dollar tip)/9(what they paid total since they were given a dollar back each)= 3(guys)

All the money was accounted for.

nerdlogic is right tom if you add the $2 in to get $29 you would have given the waitress $4 as a tip when she only took $2.

I'd like to invite two of you out to dinner (dutch treat, of course)

I get the bill and say that it's $30. Let's say that instead of the waitress collecting the money, you all give me your $10. The waitress then comes back and says that the bill was miscalculated and that the real bill is $25. I pay the $25 bill, give each of you a dollar back and pocket the other three dollars.

Do you have any trouble tracking the money now? It's the same sequence, only removing the waitress. You now can see that the statement "each man paid $9" is false, 'cause I got some of your money. Thanks for the tip .

Ken

each man did in fact pay $9 in total. Let us do the basic math here

3x10=30

now each got a dollar back so now we have

3x9=27

and the waitress kept 2 of those dollars cause she didnt know how to split it so

27-2=25

which is what the food cost...

@tom your posts are confusing
