Im going to have a 6600 in my next computer, and might wanna overclock it. I wanna know how much better on average this card can get. Like, I heard that it is possible to get a 6600 to the equivelance of a 6800 if you know what your doing.. Just wanna get some ideas. Excuse my noobness if I sound at all like a noob.

Thanks

From the benchmarks I've seen, 6600GT is lightyears behind a single 6800GT/Ultra. Even in SLI mode, 6600 is still only about 3/4ths the performance of a 6800. I doubt, even in OC and SLI, that you could hit 6800 3DMark scores. I could be wrong through, I have yet to venture into the video card OC, that is..... until I get my XFX 6600 in soon :):)

Corrections:
Though it is difficult to establish norms for any kind of overclockability for hardware, from what I have observed, most 6600GT's have at least 40mhz of GPU headroom, and 60mhz of GDDR3 headroom. With appropriate cooling, and good cooling it is easy to get GPU clock in excess of 600mhz, and RAM clocks in excess of 1200. My board is running at 610/1215 for example, cooled by a STASISThermal.com IceStorm heatsink. With voltmods, I've seen 6600GT's hit 670/1300 at which point they are on par with a 6800GT performance wise!
Speaking of performance, this should straighten things out:
A moderately overclocked 6600GT <600/1200mhz will be comparable to a 6800.
An aggressively overclocked 6600GT >600/1200mhz will be faster than a 6800 and can reach 6800GT levels of performance.
In SLI, 6600GT's are at least as fast as a single 6800GT with the latest Forceware drivers.
Overclocking in SLI is typically in vain - buy two BFG OC boards if you want a few extra mhz. :p LOL

Dollar for dollar nothing hits harder than a NV43... :)

w/ a zalman vf-700 and as5 I got my 6600 gt oc up [email protected] stable. Anyway, I would most definately go with the 6800 GT. the 6600 has 1/2 the memory and 1/2 the bandwidth. Save up for a little longer and go w/ the 6800 GT.
