notebook cooler modding...

hey guys,

i got one of those cheap notebook coolers with 2 80mm fans but both only runs at 5 v each so its pretty weak. i opened it up to see if i can replace it with 12v fans and saw that they wired the two fan's wires to one single wire connection output (usb powered). is this why its so weak? or can i replace the fans with the same wiring and get 12v out of it?

USB only puts out 5Volts, to install a 12V (and not underclock it ) fan into that you would need to tap into power from elsewhere.

Yea, just found that out , luckily, this thing has the plug for a dc 12v plug. That should work right?

You sure its a 12V plug or does the adapter a 5V dc adapter? If it is a 12V plug, then you would have to find out which wires teh 12V goes to because I'm sure they wouldn't run the stock fans off 12V if they are meant for 5.

For some reason, I'm getting a mental image of a laptop cooler with a pair of Vantec Tornadoes stuffed into it, running full tilt, with a laptop floating above it like a hovercraft.....

I'd be willing to bet that adapter is 5v as well. I suppose it possible to rewire the unit completely and use 12v fans and a 12v adapter, but would it be worth the trouble, and how loud would it wind up being??

Well, ... my thinkpad adapter is in fact 16v, so having 12v input is not out of question... however, if you connect the fan that way, it will likely only work when AC connected and not when draining battery... but for sure the battery itself is providing between 10 and 12 volts, so there for sure is an 'always live' 10v or so connection point inside most laptops....

Think you guys read wrong, there is no adapter for the notebook cooler. It is usb powered, but the usb cable is detachable. The cooler has a hole/plug where you can plug an adapter to it (the ones used on cordless phones, nintendo, etc) So far i've switch the fans to 12v fans and now I just gotta look around the house for a dc 12v adapter. If all works well, I mite even switch those fans out for 92mm Sanyo Denki's heheheh...
