EQ2..I get massive slow down in towns..do you?

I have Everquest 2....love the game, however I always get choppy, laggy badness in towns...especially in Babbleshire. Right now im running an Athlon 64 3000+ socket 754 OC'd 2.2ghz, a 512mb stick of Corsair CMX, and an Nvidia 6800, still tweaking but right now running at 375/800 12pipes 6 shaders. Im running at roughly medium quality.....what rig's are you guys trying to run this game on and do you get choppy game play in towns?

You need 1G RAM minimum. Get another 512 stick, you'll notice a huge difference.

Really? I thought 512mb was enough for games these days. Ok so if I do buy another stick I should probably get the same Corsair model that I have now correct? I know that on socket 754 while the board supports dual channel the Athlon chips do not for some reason, so getting a pair of Twins wouldn't make sense correct?

I don't think it would make a difference. Just get another stick of 512mb the same make and model of the one you have already. So you don't run into issues.

Deffinatly get 1gig of ram if not more. EQ2 is memory hungry. Yes they say 512meg is good for games, but considering most higher end games these days take at least 300-500megs of ram, you'll need more if you want to get the most out of it.

2gig of ram is really nice and did help improve frame rate some during long playtimes in the game. Overally the ram will help more then anything. Tweaking the graphics settings can help too, there are some guides out there to get the best bag for the card you own. Overall I was running between medium/high settings after I did some tweaks to my config files.

@ 1280x1024 Res I was running around 20-30 FPS in town, 40-60 outside and around 20-25 in larger groups. Killing shadows will get you anywhere from 50-100%+ preformance increase, expecially the complex ones on buildings and such.

I have 1gb and have city lag from time to time. Not horrible, but irritating.

Well my second stick of 512 is coming by the end of this week. I probably should have a gig in this thing anyway. Thanks for the advice, I really did notice that when I start to lag my HDD light goes friggin bonkers.

The 1gb wouldn't be so necessary if the game didn't have a hefty memory leak. Takes an hour or so of playing to break the 512mb of physical ram when it starts eating into your HDD swap and killing things.

1gb stretches that time to several hours. 4-5 usually depending on how often you zone and where you're zoning between. There's no escaping the evil memory leaks.

Might I ask how much does your OS take up in Ram then? The game itself on load takes nearly a 400megs of ram.

Emm I think it hovers between 100mb and 128mb with nothign running. If I really want I can close a couple of things in my taskbar and drop it to about 80mb. The game loads up at bringing my total to about 400mb and adds about 15-20mb every time you zone. Or every time I zone. These are my experiences. Also I noticed that the higher your texture settings are the faster you run into the memory leak issues.

Well highly doubt half the people on the forums run that low for system memory for the OS. Lowest I've seen mine is 150MB and thats sliming lots of stuff out including firewalls and antivirus software. Currently my main system runns about 250MB when bootup, my secondary system about 420MB. You got some secret you need to share to drop system memory down

But you are correct about the memory issue yet it does stop expanding. November god ya memory hog, there was no stopping it was 2gig + in 6 hours, December highest I got it was 1.5gig for EQ2 running for 12+ hours. Then in Janurary it dropped to about 1.2gig EQ2 running for 12+ hours.

I know my system settings where quiet high, and typically staying in certain zones for longer periods of time filled the ram up faster, or to where it just topped out and wouldn't go higher.

yeah they say 512mb because techinically it is playable like that and they are just fishing for people to buy their product so they try and make it look as appealing and user friendly as possible.

its about as funny as when planetside launched and the minimum req memory was 256mb which was fine if you wanted to play a comic book and not a mmofps.

glad to hear you got everything running ok again though sucks to have games chopping it takes away from the immursion (i know i probably didnt spell that right)
