I read the MaximumPC magazine like it is a sin not to. I also install/uninstall programs every month when I get the CD with the Magazine. I don't know if any of that has anything to do with my problem, but here is the problem.

When I try to install any program that runs in 16 bit, it won't install. It gives me an error saying something about win32bit can't run 16bit Apps. It does no good to change the Compatability mode of the program to Win98/Me, or Win95.

I have run System Mechanic 5 to fix the registry, and it found 221 errors, but that didn't stop the problem.

Any idea's?

Anyone know what the run command to check for corrupted files is?

BTW I am running WindowsXP Pro Teachers/Students edition.

yeah but it will compare the files to the xp cd. I wonder what program won't run? I suggest not running the compare util since it will hose your system if you tweak all the settings.

For some known causes and possible solutions see '"16 Bit MS-DOS Subsystem" Error Message When You Install a Program':
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314452
"This behavior can occur after you install a 16-bit program or a program that uses a 16-bit installation program that is not Windows XP-compliant. This behavior can also occur if the Command.com file that is installed on your computer is damaged or is the incorrect version."

and 'Error message when you install or start an MS-DOS or 16-bit Windows-based program':
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=324767
Quote: "This issue may occur if one or more of the following files are missing or damaged:
>Config.nt
>Autoexec.nt
>Command.com "

For a quick fix download and run XP_Fix.EXE:
http://www.visualtour.com/downloads/xp_fix.exe
"This installaton program will reinstall the missing or corrupt Windows XP system files command.com, autoexec.nt and config.nt. The absence or corruption of one or more of these files causes a "16 Bit Subsystem" error."

Sweetness! That fixed it flawlessly!

The program is Forsaken. A Game I will never get tired of. That and PhotoSuite III. It's also an oldie, but goody.

Thanks again!
