6600gt / Silencer 6 conflicts on A8N-SLI Deluxe

It seemed to me my two XFX 6600gt vid cards were running hotter than I would like. I bought two A/C silencer 6 coolers to cure the heat problem but their bulk caused some other problems.

The upper cooler almost covers the chipset fan and is about 1/4" clear of it. This does not cause the chipset to overheat but if you change this fan the new one could not be any higher than the stock fan. Most aftermarket heatsinks would be too high also.

The lower cooler blocks the SI plug socket. I have setup a raid5 array on my machine so I had to severly modify the cooler just to install it. I made it work but if you want this cooler and use the SI socket be advised it will NOT be "plug and play".

Notice chipset fan clearance. Lower cooler has been modified to move cooler fan away from motherboard to provide clearance with red sata cords.

Thankyou soooo much for posting this!!

I am in the process of thinking about changing my HSF on my 6600GT XFXs in favour of a better cooling solution!

Keep us updated onto how these new blowers perform! My cards maximum overclock is 530 Core 1200 Memory and sometimes 540 core depending on the room temperature.

Where you able to get a overclock to or over 575MHz with these new cooling units? And does the heatsink actually touch all the ram chips onboard? If so, can you get any higher overclock from it?

Sorry for all these questions but you just made my day with that picture. Read my siggy to see my setup!

For overclocking performance the biggist boost I got on my 6600GTs was from using the VXG 71.20b driver. I was stuck at about 570/1180. With the VXG driver I could test at 585/1270.

The coolers also have provide very good results. Overclocking is now maxed at 606/1290. When testing before installing these coolers, I saw a temp as high as 85c on the #1 card. With the coolers I have not seen any reading over 70c. Before the cooler, artifacting during testing was very heavy. The coolers eliminated all noticable artifacting. Idle temperature dropped about 7c.

Overall, I am very pleased with these coolers. I would recommend them with the one stipulation that you will not be able to use your SI socket. Even 90degree angle plugs in that socket will interfere with the cooler.

To OC-Master
Glad I could help with this little product review. Your thread on the A8N board was a HUGE help to me during setup. My hat is off to you OC-Master. Thank you.

i had a scilencer on my x850 in that mobo and it caused a whole load of broblems the worst of whitch being thai i couldent get the card out without takeing off the scilencer because a screw on the plastic thing around the fan prevented me from realeseing the clip on the pci e slot and i had to take off that top part on the mb cooler otherwise it would get run over bt the scilencer

that and other problems went away when i got my zalman vf700-cu

Yeah I hear ya. That clip release is a problem on my setup also, though not as bad as you describe. You can get behind the cooler to undo the clip but it is a pain. Probably would help if I did'nt have sausages for fingers.

Just a quick question,

Are those the REV2 NV Silencer 6 coolers or the original editions? The revised ones are supposed to support the A8N-SLI and Abit nForce4 series...

These are Rev2. I don't know what the original looked like but if this is a "fix" for SLI I am NOT impressed.
