Right? Right?
Ok so here's the sitiation which can be summed up by a simple equation: Dell + WindowsME + 50 year old woman + AOL 5 + Cable = BAD. Of course, AOL 5 got its weasely little software fingers into IE. The people whom I'm helping had our local cable company (Adelphia) come over to their house to try and install the service. They of course were unable to do so cause AOL had highjacked IE. The poor tech tried to uninstall AOL but that didnt help. So he reccomended she re-install windows and left it in her hands.
The problem is every time one tries to run IE 5.5 on that computer it just gives a .DLL crash error and closes itself. I can edit the preferences, but that of course doesnt help. As far as I can tell, all vestiges of AOL have been removed, including registry entries and all the old networking components to no avail.
So my questions to you guys is what can be done to a poor old dell that was highjacked by AOL? Can I try bringing a copy of IE 6 over there and installing that fresh? Or alternatively would something like Netscape or Mozilla be able to work? Keep in mind, this is all going to be done for someone who is going to use the internet for email and surfing food channel recepies... I'm just looking for basic functionality and connectivity here. Is there anything I can do short of everyone's favorite format C:\ ?
