Ok, I am not to keen on the Server series of OS's from Microsoft, so bear with me.

The company I work for is moving locations, well we are building a new server and upgrading to 2k3 as well. We basically use the server as a File/Print server, DHCP, DNS, and AD. Well how would I go about migrating the files and settings from the 2k server to the 2k3 server?

I figure I will go about something like this, Transfer all shared folders from the 2k server to the 2k3 server(done already), and keeping the same structure. Thats about as far as I have gotten, lol. I am afraid to mess with transfering the AD, on account of I know nothing baout it.

I basically need help with migrating AD and DNS. Thanks for any help guys. All opinions are welcome, assuming of course you know what you are talking about ;) .

-edit-

Just thought about this, I am trying to do it while keeping the same domain naim, and I would like to keep the server name the same, but I dont know if that is possible.

If you need more info, just ask. I will be more than happy to answer.

What you need to do is to bring up both machines, and then run 'dcpromo' from the command prompt on the 2k3 server. Add it as a domain controller in your old domain. It will convert your AD to 2k3 format, and once that is done you can use dcpromo on the old machine to demote it from domain controller status, leaving your new server as your only domain controller.

It's important to do it the right way so AD knows which machines are active DCs and which machines have been removed/demoted.

It won't convert the old domain to 2k3, it will put the 2k3 server into 2000-mixed mode, as the 2000 AD server wouldn't know what to do with a 2k3 functional level. So after you demote the 2000 server you will need to raise the functional level of the domain to 2k3, if that is something you want to do. It is better to have a backup domain controller, so it might be a good idea to keep that other server as a backup domain controller.

Ok I found a guide, and they said to do it like this:

Thanks for posting!

Based on the description, I recommend you perform a not in-place upgrade.
You may consider the following process to upgrade 2k to 2k3 server.

1. Run Adprep /forestprep, Adprep /domainprep on win2k server.
2. Install win2k3 on your new machine and join it to the win2k domain.
3. Promote win2k3 to be a backup DC. This process will replicate
user/computer accounts from 2k to 2k3.
4. Install AD-integrated DNS on 2k3, this process will auto replicate DNS
from 2k to 2k3.
