Ok, I've been reading through these forums and it seems like a lot of people are looking for 64 bit linux/bsd os's but knowone knows where to start.

So, I think if people want to play along, we could centralize this one thread if everyone could post all known 64 bit os's and known issues with each here.

i'll start it off

Gentoo http://www.gentoo.org
This is my personal favorate, it is what I use, and I have had very good
luck with it. However, it is not bug free. One problem I have had is with
win32codecs, for whatever reason, it compiles and installs fine, but I
cannnot get it to work (could be personal error), and than there are
the general 64 bit problems...... Openoffice.org does not compile in 64
bit so you must use the binary package (which is 32 bit) and if you want
to use most of your plugins for firefox (or any browser), you need to use
the binary package for firefox as well (also 32 bit).

Other alternative 64 bit os's that I have little or no experience with are
Mandrake/Mandiva
Suse
Vidalinux (basically Gentoo)
Knoppix64
Fedora core 3 and 4

If others know of or use other 64 bit distros, please post them here along with any known issues or comments, I think this will be a big help to those new to 64 bit.

i've been doing some research and found a few x86_64 distros.....

Ubuntu
FreeBsd
Centos
Turbolinux
Whitebox
Lormalinux
Freesbie (a live kde freebsd distro)
NetBsd
Lineox

I'm sure there are others, please post them as you see or find them

I must add, i plan on porting PcLinuxOS to X86_64, but it may be a while till I complete this as I am quite busy right now. I think this would be an awesome beginner 64 bit distro, but...... it may be harder to port than I think...... only time will tell
