Remove Messenger pop ups

Will someone remind me of the registry edit that stops MS Messenger from receiving pop up messages from @#$% sales organizations.

My router went down yesterday so I pluged my home network unto a switch and low and behold, pop ups from Error Fixer . com began showing up alerting me impending doom unless I click on the OK button. Duhhh!

The pop ups appear even whithout my browser (firefox) or MS Messenger running so I am guessing they are from MS Messenger.

THANKS!

Is this what you're looking for? http://www.pchell.com/support/ipmessaging.shtml It's not a registry edit per se, but it does permanently disable the thing.

I am sorry but turning the messenger service to disabled does work. Could you please link to where anyone has still gotten messenger popups with it disabled. I am just curious how you could get them with the service disabled. Also it is automatically disabled when you install SP2.

Since you are getting these popups it means a few things:
  • You haven't installed SP2
  • Your PC doesn't have a portfilter, instead, Windows directly exposes any running network service to the Internet. Including the ports used for the sasser and blaster attacks
  • If you have filesharing enabled, anyone on the Internet can access those folders too, since by default XP doesn't use passwords

Go and do yourself a favour, install SP2. Or soon you won't need any advice from the forums in here anymore: some malware will have trashed your Windows install like sasser and msblaster did before all over the world. Or worse: someone hacks your PC and misuses it for dDOSing others, sending spam or distributing illegal files. All illegal things for which you could be held responsible.

Personally I don't like running without a firewall. I use sygate pro and it blocks all those pop ups--portscans --attacks.

sp2 does have a firewall. but I don't like it as much as just about any 3rd party firewall.
