Windows is adding non-existant hardware...

Alright so this morning I turned on my computer and I got the popup saying that new hardware had been installed and that I needed to restart my computer. I didn't know what it could be, so I restarted my computer. Afterwards I checked Device Manager and it now says that I have a SCSI Controller (A347SCSI SCSI Controller). This is odd cause I don't have a SCSI Controller and my motherboard doesn't support it...

I figured it was a freak accident so I uninstalled it and restarted again. After the restart, Windows tried installing the hardware again!! Is it OK to just leave it installed, or is there a way to permanently stop it from coming up.

EDIT: Ran Norton AV and some antispyware stuff-didn't find anything. Also, I'm running WindowsXP Home.

Has your board AGP/PCI locks? This could happen if you have PCI frequency out of spec. If your rig is overclocked try reseting it to a default clockspeeds.
Post more info of your rig.

No overclock--its a Inspiron 600m laptop. One of my friends thought it was broken so he told me that if I could fix that I could have it, since he had already gone out and bought a new laptop. He was surprised to see me the next day with the laptop working flawlessly.

I can't post the specs now, because I don't have it with me. I'll post the specs later when I get home.

Got any USB devices plugged in? How about a PCMCIA card of any type?

Or, did you install any burning software that perhaps created a virtual CD/DVD drive? Alcohol 120 does this.

The only usb device I have used on it is a usb mouse, but I do have Alcohol120 installed on it. I don't think it is causing the problem, though, since I've used it before on multiple computers (including this laptop) and never had problems on any until now.

But at this point, who knows?

install any software like Daemon tools or alcohol 120% - these programs add a SCSI device for loading images.

Sorry just saw it - it is Alcohol 120 - uninstall it - device will go away.

Actually, you don't have to uninstall Alcohol itself, you can open it up and delete the virtual drive instead, and it won't come back.

It can be useful though, if you download an ISO image and want to read it without actually burning it to CD (or run whatever program is on it and not have to burn it).

quite honestly if once it's installed and it doesn't come back it'd say leave it and forget it. it's not gonna hurt anything. just my two cents.

I had a similar issue on my laptop - turned it on one day and it tried to install some random hardware. Wouldn't worry about it... no harm done. Before this happened, I didn't run Windows Update and I didn't have Alcohol installed - very strange!

Binny.
