Laser labelling?

Hello.

I read an article a month or 2 ago about DVD drives that could write titles on the top of the disc with a laser. Has this come out yet? And what is it called?

Yes it has. Its called Lightscribe. here are some of the models that have it. Right now I think its just HP and BenQ.

Do you guys think other companies will jump in on the technology? If they do, will the prices of the drives drop at all? Lightscribe is pretty nice since it'd save me having to buy all these Sharpies heh.

I don't think I'll ever use lightscribe. Reasons being:

I hate waiting to burn a cd/dvd, if its not an audio cd I burn as fast as I can, so I'm not about to waiting around for a day and a half just so I can have a pretty label.

No matter what, the lightscribe media will always be more expensive, not good for a cheap man as myself.

We don't know how good the actual media itself is. I'll spend more money on better media that I have to use a sharpie on, than worse media that I can burn a label to.

Now, if you have a group, or are burning your own dvds for family/friends, I see reason in that. But for personal use, I don't feel I would benifit from it enough.

Two things that I dont like about lightscribe
1.Requires special more expensive cds/dvds
2.Priting a image on cd/dvd can take up to 1hour
Look into cd printers, also a options, inorder words a printer that can print on cds.
Lightscribe is nice, if you burn very few, cds/dvds, if you can afford the time it takes, and the extra cost of blank media.

I have the HP DVD640. I must admit that it takes some time for heavy graphics on the best image quality, but I find that the lightscribe feature is REALLY nice for me and for my customers. It is very professional looking and makes me look good in the process.

Yeah it's decent but most people wouldn't benefit from it

If they made drives that would use any cdr/dvdr for label printing I might get a drive like that, but since they don't have any of those avaliable (and probably never will) I wouldn't get one, even though it seems like a cool thing to have.
