3.2e Disaster ...

I was taking out my 3.2e to test in my other P4C800 and I dropped it .... (from about a foot up) and it bent 4 pins with 1 falling off ... I put it in my P4C800 anyways to see if it even booted up ... It recognizes the processor but my mobo says "Fatal Error, System Halted" does .... that mean my 3.2e is totally screwd? Please help ... last thing I wanna do is work another week or 2 for 200 bucks ....

xtreme, did you place the pin in the hole that it was missing from, that works most of the time, gl

Definetly NO WARRANTY for broken pins.

Try to insert the broken pin into the empty socket hole then putting the CPU in over it..might just make good contact.

Fellow OCforum Members .... I think im the luckiest man alive (there are a few people this has happened too) I put the CPU back in, plugged in my hdds and boots into windows ... my main concern was I would have a HUGE performance hit without that pin. I did Sandra 2005: all scores are normal. I had 4.1Ghz outta an old P4C800 board (not droop modded) and I got 6300mb on the memory test ... I consiter myself LUCKY. Btw, this dropped on my desk .. not on the carpet .

They don't have 478 pins for nothing, find out what that pin does, and have it soldered back on, cost you a few bucks from a professional.

I had a missing pin on a P3 (chip was new but pins were bent) that broke while I was trying to bend it back., Intel sent me a new processor overnight. Call them and tell them what happened. They may be generous.

Also, JIC they didn't RMA it i looked up the pin schematic to see what it did. It was only a redundant ground, of which there were several (like in the 40s or 50s) so it may not be as crucial of a pin as you might think.

If it's a ground or v-pin, maybe even one of the vtt pins, it won't hurt anything, as is likely in this case.

Lucky man there

This guy will repair broken pins on CPU too. I think 5 pins or less replaced/repaired for like $10.00 U.S. .Might save you a lost chip.

Your first post says it wouldn't boot. And now it boots? What's different?

Well, it boots just fine just I was retarded to take off a jumper off the P4C800 so I can jump start it (not in a case ) so it gave me that error ...but the processor is just fine .. 4.2ghz running strong.

i had a nice guy from the Uk send me a 2.8 northy for just shipping which wasnt to expensive and it had 2 or 3 missing pins and just by dumb luck i thought i would try and boot it before shipping it out for repair.
booted great and oced for me also.

didnt have a use for it and sold it cheap to a folder.
tbh ive seen more "i broke 3 pins off my cpu and it still works!!!" threads than the other way around. about time we ocers get some good luck huh? lol

You know I was just thinking about something similar last night. Took my 3500+ Winnie out that does 2760 (just finished benching half of the Marks at 2794, matter of fact). I had it laying on the wood floor. Imagine some noob accidentally stepping on the thing??? Oh my Gawd!

BTW, a jeweler can probably solder back those pins, if it's on the outer periphery of the CPU, that is. They do a lot of microminature soldering on jewelry.

Heh, I just did something like this today...my 3400+ newcastle refurb had just come in, so I go take my alpha off the 3000+ in my current setup, and, when I pull the heatsink, I'm left staring at an empty socket, I'm like, "that's a neat tri...WAIT!" I had to slide my cpu off the bottom of the heatsink...

After installed the 3400+, which I installed backwards I later noticed, wouldn't boot, had bent pins, did a little freak out, unbent the pins, wala, just having my video glitch now.

BTW, don't try installing an A64 like an older Athlon/XP, I matched the arrow up to the bottom of the retention clip, oops.
