How to Mod the D and Ultra-D to SataII and SLI

I posted this in my other thread but figured since its a new mobo it deserves its own thread..

DFI just came out with a new NF4 motherboard the "DFI NF4-D".. Its just like the NF4 Ultra-D but doesnt have SataII or SLI enabled in the chipset..Now since DFI uses the same pcb and chipset as their SLI motherboards this board CAN be modded to enable SLI and SataII !! ..

All you need to do is bridge the contacts like explained in ExRoadie's guide but connect two more and you have yourself a SLI-D..

Here is a pic of which ones need to be bridged..

This is a very easy mod and the price for this mobo is currently $117 @ mwave.. So all you need is a bridge and you have yourself a SLI-D motherboard..

*some links*
DFI NF4-D for sale at ZipZoomFly
DFI NF4-D for sale at Mwave
DFI NF4-D for sale at monarchcomputer
Link to ExRoadie's guide for the SLI mod..

Why would you get this over the Ultra-D that is about the same price?

Cuz its even cheaper then the Ultra-D and also mods to a SLI-D.. $14 is $14.

Every little bit counts..

Understandable. I just didn't look at mwave, which is the only place where it's cheaper than an Ultra-D at newegg.

Just to clarify- the Ultra-D doesn't have SLI enabled either.

Question about the board. On the manual it says the SATA is only 1.5gb while the other boards are 3gb. The board has only 4 SATA ports (other four only has place for it to be soldered onto) Will the current 4 SATA ports run at 3gb?

Thats a good question.. but unfortunatly im not sure.. I think it would be ok since its just like raising the buss speed on a mobo which doesnt require a reinstall of windows.. but thats just a assumption ..

Also..
Just to let everyone know the SLI bridge from Leadtek is available at Newegg now too..

On thing to look out for is that NVidia officially & at least originally uses/used two different cores for the NForce4. The one used in the NF4 normal edition is an older design thats not supposed to have as many PCIe lanes or SATA-II so you may end up not getting the support for SLI or SATA-II even after doing the mod. If you have the newer core design that they used for the NF4 Ultra & NF4 SLI (they're the same chip but have one resistor thats different between the two, which is why the mod works from Ultra -> SLI) then it'll work just fine since you have a wolf in sheep's clothing so to speak .

I hope that everyone gets the latter & not the former (it would be cheaper to just make one chip & bin it to each spec than to keep two designs in the fabs so hopefully they follow the economic/fun for us path). Happy modding.

Im not sure where you heard that from and it may be true with other mobo manufacturers .. But I have a inside source that has confirmed for me that ALL of DFI's NF4's are moddable.. And that they purchased twenty-thirty thousand raw chips and they are all the same.. They have many that are not even placed on boards yet, so DFI's will be moddable for quite some time..

that just answered a question that's been nagging me since yesterday; why is dfi even making this board if the 'extra options' can be enabled with some simple modding? if it turns out that some boards cannot be fully modded, i may have to turn toward one of the pricier, 'fully enabled' nf4 boards...

Forgive me if I am wrong, but I could have sworn I read somewhere that nVidia did something to stop people from Modding their NF4 Ultra boards to SLI. Why it is different for this board? Not trying to be awrkward, I believe it works and am going to order this board, assuming I can overcome my fear of physically modding expensive electronics. (I thought I was going to pass out with fright when putting the modchip on my Xbox)

IS the DFI NF4-D based on the Ultra Chipset, or the plain NF4? Is the only difference between this and the NF4 Ultra-D the No and type of SATA ports, and SLI. Nothing else?

EDIT: Found the article

Second, nVidia has advised us that future shipments of the Ultra chipset have been modified so that the mod to SLI will no longer be possible. An additional side effect of this second action is that the "Dual Video" mode, which performs at about 90% of SLI performance levels, will only work with nVidia SLI drivers 66.75 or earlier. If you do a quick check of web driver postings you will see it is now very difficult to find 66.75 drivers. With a chipset modded to SLI the "Dual Video" mode worked through 70.xx versions of the nVidia driver. nVidia also made it clear they will continue to make driver changes to prevent functioning of any "non-standard" (8X/8X) operation of their SLI driver. This also throws into question whether the VIA "dual graphics" mode on the 894 Pro chipset will ever work with nVidia graphics cards. If you are interested in the current UT Ultra-D we suggest you buy one now if you can find it. Future versions of the UT Ultra-D will not have the same capabilities as a result of these actions.
EDIT Again: Reading over at the DFI forums has clarified that I am wrong. Ohwell.

Yup, got the NF4-D board. Very easy mod, only problem is I have no real way of testing to see if it worked

Do you know of any UK Online retailer that has the NF4-D? They have the Ultra and SLI versions, at £137 and £104 each I might add, I hate the way you have such cheap prices.
