My Case Project Log

I am begining construction of my new case. I bought a sheet of 3/4" finish grade plywood. The case will be 28H x 18D x 12W. It will house 2 mobos. I have designed a "hood scoop" to go on top (included in dimensions), that will exhaust air from the radiator and baffle the fan noise.

The case will probably be fairly heavy, but I dont intend to move it much. And one side will be 90% acrylic, so that will save some weight.

I think I found a new way to attach removable panels. My method means no screws or latches. I will reveal it when it is done.

with proper ventilation, there should be no problems with the wood heating up alot. My guess is there will be a higher case temp than metal though.

That may well be, but not because wood is the material used.
Damarble will probably have joints that are tight and leave out the myriad unexplainable holes that manufactured cases are riddled with.

I am planning out the ventilation system very carefully, the temps *should* be good. Here is my first rendering, to give an idea of what it will be like. Tomorrow is my day off so I will get started.

May I suggest 1/2" ply? I am working on a custom case myself, and 1/2" ply seems more than sturdy enough.

I wish I had gone with 1/2" but too late. At least it will be almost indestructible!

I've never seen a case made of wood before, but a quick search revealed many. Never even occured to me to make my own case. I think I may start a project over the summer.

The main structure is almost complete. I'll try to get some pix up soon. It will need some putty, but I intended to paint it anyway.

I nabbed a set of small (1") casters off a little dehumidifier being junked. They should work well.

Progress has been slow but this is what I've got now, dont mind the plywood tacked on the corner, it is a referance for the door:
