Nah calm down, you don't need to buy a top-of-the-line 6800GT to see noticeable gains over your puny x300, hehehe. Right now, just about everything is faster than the x300.

Everyone here says a 6600GT (~150) is more than adequate. It has the best bang for the bucks so far and can do SLI. Companies by MSI, Chaintech and EVGA are good, but look closely at the price. Certain companies have higher prices because they give you a nice box and some outdated games.

Go to Tomshardware.com, they just posted a new "Summer Graphic Card" roundup. It should summarize the main cards out there.

I have this card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102504

I have no problems running any game I own at 1600x1200, max settings, but withouy anti-alaising. If you want something more future-proof, I would suggest this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814131414 or maybe this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814150091

Both cards are overkill for most games out today, and should last you for quite a while. The X800xl is very similar in performance to the 6800gt, but doesn't overclock quite as well. I'd say it still has a much better $ : performance, only get the 6800gt if you plan on using SLI.

My opinions on sli: by the time your 6800gt or x800xl doesn't have enough horsepower, it will probably be more cost effective to just sell it and get a new card. It makes a huge amount of heat and uses a lot of power, and some games don't even support it!

or i did until i went out got drunk and bought the ultra !!!! o . m . g
